Ms. Compassionate Data Scientist

Hi Mr. Compassionate Data Scientist! First off, please don’t be humbled by my 10% rating, as this puts you square in the “average” acceptance rate at Stanford GSB. The reason I havent gone any higher is this: Do you really need an MBA to achieve your goals? Based on your introduction as someone who “looks forward to professionally helping students understand data science and taking it up as a career,” I’m implying that your goal to move into a leadership position is in this area. If so, it is not clear to me that an MBA is the best path to get you there. If your heart is set on an MBA, I encourage you to get deep, specific, and meaningful about what your goals REALLY are and why a Stanford GSB MBA is critical to that.

I admire your goal of teaching others data analysis skills which have become extremely important for business success. Your academics and testing are strong and your diploma in Indian classical music leads me to believe that your creativity extends beyond data. There are some parts of your information that with more detail could be helpful in determining if Stanford makes sense for your career goals. For example, do you aspire to become an academic or start a company that focuses on data skills training? You mention you are an “industry mentor,” but how does that play out? Is it informal or formal? I would also like to learn more about the models that made a difference in your community. Stanford is a place where making impact is vital. Finally, what type of leadership roles interest you? What industry? Overall, you have the start of an intriguing application, but we would have to learn more about you to better assess your chances at Stanford or any other school.
