What You Need To Know

The MSU Spartan community is said to be vast and supportive, located in the vibrant town of East Lansing, Michigan. The Michigan State Broad College of Business has been graduating MBAs since the 1960s. The B-school ranked No. 1 for Supply Chain Management and Logistics by U.S. News & World Report for the eighth straight year in 2024.

“We teach people to look at creative solutions to problems, there’s a roadmap for being creative in a business context. It’s important that every student has multiple opportunities to show what they can do in real environments, and we do that across the 21 months of the Broad MBA curriculum,” says Wayne Hutchison, managing director of the Broad full-time MBA.

Academics And Programs

Students have described Broad’s 21-month full-time MBA program as a home away from home because of the small class sizes, a heavy emphasis on team-based work, and strong relationships between faculty and students. The program combines a theory-based curriculum with soft skills used for effective leadership.

On average, the program welcomes between 60 to 70 students per year. In a span of 21 months, Broad MBAs complete 61 credits in the usual core subjects, allowing for candidates to choose from six concentrations including Finance, HR Management, Marketing, Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship and Supply Chain Management. These can be personalized by studying electives in areas such as consulting, insights and analytics, data visualization, and global immersion.

Internships are highly recommended between a Broad MBA’s first and second year. Every year, the Broad MBA hosts experiential learning workshops for students called Extreme Green, where companies present a business problem to MBAs. They then have 4 days to solve and present their solutions — a great opportunity to practice all they have learned in the program.

Outside of the required curriculum, Broad students frequent tech treks and other professional development opportunities. Also popular at Broad is the Kesseler Team Leadership Lab, dedicated to leadership and team processes and the Supply Chain Laboratory, which simulates an end-to-end supply chain, looking especially at the way information flows along it.

Beginning last fall, Michigan State University’s Broad Full-Time MBA now includes a STEM-certified option. Both STEM and full-time MBA students work in 5-person teams, reshuffled each semester, and MBAs can specialize in Supply Chain Management, Marketing, or Finance with a 12-credit pathway.

Rankings Data For MSU Broad

The annual Poets&Quants’ MBA ranking takes the five most influential lists from U.S. News, The Financial Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, Forbes, and The Economist and combines them together using weights based on the soundness of each publication’s methodology. Bringing them together this way diminishes the anomalies that often crop up in a given year and also gives applicants a better sense of an overall school’s reputation and brand value. This year’s 2022-2023 list gives a 35% weight to the U.S. News ranking, a 25% weight to Forbes’ return-on-investment ranking, a 20% weight to the Financial Times, and 10% each to The Economist and to Bloomberg Businessweek.
