Back then, they wouldn’t consult their parents for advice. When they received some, they’d do the exact opposite. They struck an independent pose and dreaded being seen in public with their parents. But they’d always make peace just when they’d run out of money (or their laundry piled up). Then, the cycle began anew. Fast forward to the Millennial generation. Suddenly, parents are advisors and confidants. And they’re intimately involved in their children’s decisions – even into their late twenties. And that can create a conundrum for MBA consultants. At best, parents will tag along. At worst, they’ll interfere and contradict their advice (always with the caveat, “Don’t tell him I talked to you.”). Yes, more parents are picking up the tab for their aspiring twentysomething MBA applicants. And that means they want a say. But what crosses the line?
