Some 15 faculty members at Harvard University, including 13 from Harvard Business School, have been named to an advisory committee to help find a successor to current Dean Nitin Nohria who will leave at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year.

The HBS members of the search committee will include Dennis W. Campbell, Rohit Deshpandé, Robin J. Ely, Francesca Gino, Janice Hammond, Rebecca Henderson, Herman “Dutch” B. Leonard, Josh Lerner, Tsedal B. Neeley, Mario Small, Luis Viceira, Matt Weinzierl, and David Yoffie.

Several of those HBS profs hold administrative roles or joint appointment with other schools. Hammond is a senior associate dean for culture and community at HBS, while Viceira is a senior associate dean for executive education. Henderson also teaches at the Kennedy School, and Small teaches in the sociology department.

PRESIDENT & PROVOST PRAISE NOHRIA FOR A ‘DECADE OF EXTRAORDINARY LEADERSHIP’

Just two of the 15 members have no affiliation with the business school: Claudine Gay, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Hanspeter Pfister, a computer science professor in Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

University President Lawrence S. Bacow and Provost Alan M. Garber made the announcement in a Nov. 26 email, weeks after Nohria said he would step down on June 30th from the job he has held for the past decade (see HBS Dean To Call It Quits).

In the email, Bacow and Garber wrote that Nohria had completed a “decade of extraordinary leadership.”

Bacow and Garber also wrote that they encourage, students, alumni, faculty and staff to provide feedback during the search process.

“We particularly welcome your observations on the principal opportunities and challenges facing HBS in the years to come, on the qualities and experience most important to seek in the next dean, and on any individuals you regard as worthy of serious consideration,” they wrote.
