Community Work and Leadership Roles in Business School: VP of Marketing, Association of Hispanic and Black Business Students; VP of Admissions, Stern Women in Business; VP of Stern Social, Student Government; Fellow, Consortium for Graduate Study in Management; Forté Fellow; LAUNCH Orientation Leader; Board Fellow; Venture Associate at the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship

Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school? I’m really proud of my involvement in Stern Women in Business (SWIB) as VP of Admissions. It has been incredibly rewarding speaking to prospective students and helping women through their MBA journey. The process can be intimidating. As someone who personally suffered from imposter syndrome during the application process, it has been extremely fulfilling seeing women achieve their dream of getting into a top MBA program and joining the Stern community. Getting calls, texts, and emails from women who receive offers of admission has been a joy.

What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career? Prior to Stern, I worked at a creative advertising agency, Translation LLC, which focused on work that amplified Black and Brown voices. I’m most proud of my work to launch a global brand reset film for Beats by Dr. Dre with the aim of elevating Black voices to amplify the conversation around inequality and racial justice. Partnering with Black creators to execute an authentic vision celebrating Black existence, the film highlighted a creative narrative – ”You love Black culture, but do you love me?” – and positioned Beats as a new medium for youth to be heard, recognized, and enfranchise our audience.

Why did you choose this business school? The people and community. Stern’s community is second-to-none. Additionally, having a community of people of color was an important factor in my business school decision, and the Association of Hispanic and Black Business Students and the Consortium play a critical role in cultivating that at Stern.

Who was your favorite MBA professor? Dolly Chugh, who teaches Developing Managerial Skills, has been my favorite professor so far! She is funny, engaging, smart and provides insights on how to manage teams in an effective and intentional way. Her class is interactive, drives great in-class discussion, and provides a clear toolkit on how to lead teams and create a positive work culture.

What was your favorite MBA event or tradition at your business school? As one of the VP’s of Stern Social, I feel obligated to say Stern Social because it is truly one of my favorite events because it brings together the Stern community! While there are a lot of ways to connect with different affinity groups or professional clubs, Stern Social event brings together the full Stern community including Full-time MBAs, Tech MBAs, Fashion & Luxury MBAs and Part-time MBAs to connect, meet new classmates, and have fun!

Looking back over your MBA experience, what is the one thing you’d do differently and why? I would take more risks! Business school is the perfect time to take a risk on a startup idea, take a class on a topic you know nothing about, try a new industry, or send a cold email requesting a coffee chat with an industry expert.

What is the biggest myth about your school? It’s a commuter school and we don’t hang out with each other. While students do live across multiple boroughs (I live in Brooklyn!), the Stern community is really strong. I always say that Sternies are obsessed with each other in the best way possible.

What did you love most about your business school’s town? It’s pretty hard to beat New York City. It’s an incredibly diverse, crazy, fast paced, city with amazing opportunities across industries and functions. The energy and hustle of New York is contagious, and NYU’s campus is in one of the best locations in Manhattan — nestled between the East Village and the West Village.

What surprised you the most about business school? I was surprised by how collaborative people are at Stern. It has been incredible to see how people go out of their way to help each other succeed.

What is one thing you did during the application process that gave you an edge at the school you chose? I spent a lot of time reflecting on what I wanted out of my business school experience, how my previous experience had prepared me for business school, what skills I wanted to build, and the impact I wanted to make while in business school.

Which MBA classmate do you most admire? I most admire Nadia Weeks because she brilliant, charismatic, action-oriented, doesn’t take no for an answer, and is a great friend. During her two years, she has contributed significantly to the AHBBS community. This year she single-handedly planned an incredible Black History Month featuring speakers across industry and partnered with Columbia Business School for AHBBS’s biggest lineup of events. She has also taken advantage of all Stern has to offer and studied abroad at the University of Cape Town, launched a startup following an incubator at the eLeslie Labs, and worked with Dean Victor Mullins as a IDBEA Diversity Fellow.

What are the top two items on your professional bucket list?

  1. Join a nonprofit board and use my time and expertise to further the mission of the organization
  2. Work with and invest in underrepresented minority founders to develop transformative brands and companies

What made Doris such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2023?

“As an administrator at Stern, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Doris in various leadership capacities, and I can confidently say that she is an exceptional member of the Stern community.

She has demonstrated unwavering commitment in not only her academic pursuits, but also in her extracurricular activities. I’ve had the privilege to work with her on many occasions, including when she volunteered her time as an Orientation Leader to welcome the incoming cohort of Full-Time MBAs and as a VP of SGov’s Stern Social, where she helped plan community events for her peers. Additionally, I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa with Doris as part of Stern’s “Doing Business In…” programming. No matter where she is in the world, she is always doing a great job of representing the Stern community and asking thoughtful questions. Beyond that, she is an active and vibrant part of the Stern community, where she holds many leadership roles across numerous MBA Clubs like Stern Women in Business, Stern Student Government, and the Association of Hispanic and Black Business Students.

What really sets Doris apart, though, is her infectious enthusiasm. She is a true leader, who is always striving to improve the student experience for herself and her classmates. I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to get to know her throughout her MBA journey and am excited to see all the wonderful initiatives she will be part of in her role at McKinsey.”
