Pursuing an MBA is a significant life decision–but it doesn’t mean pausing your career, relocating, finding childcare, or giving up your personal hobbies. The Flexible MBA program at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is designed to meet you where you are, not the other way around. Ranked the No. 5 Best Online MBA by Forbes, the program is offered in a fully online, part-time format with the opportunity to take classes with live online sessions, pre-recorded modules, or a combination of the two, depending on your personal needs that semester.

Why an Online MBA matters

Flexibility in an online program shouldn’t be a perk. It’s necessary for many mid-career professionals, parents, and career changers. You can complete the 54 credit Flexible MBA program at Carey in as little as two years – or take courses at a pace that works best for you. Flexible MBA students have the opportunity to come into the classroom in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., or various cities across the United States to participate in in-person experiences.

This adaptability means you don’t have to choose between your current life and future career goals. You can advance in real time, applying what you learn directly to your day-to-day work. It also allows you to participate, meet, and network with your cohort when you’re available.

Our faculty recognizes that our online MBA program needs to include different learning modes and ways to bring students together. That’s why they have started to offer accelerated courses in various cities to help bring together students in a location that may be an easier commute than coming to Baltimore.

A smart investment: ROI and career development resources

Students in the Flexible MBA program have access to the same curriculum, same expert faculty, and the same alumni network as our full-time MBA students. That means you’re not sacrificing quality for convenience. Our Flexible MBA Class of 2024 saw strong returns on their investment, with career outcomes in industries like consulting, finance, health care, and technology:

  • 76% of students received a salary increase while in the program
  • 55% received a promotion
  • $150,924 average base salary

Career support is built into the program from day one through the Career & Life Design team. Whether you’re looking to climb the ladder in your current organization or pivot into a new field, you’ll benefit from one-on-one coaching, virtual employer events, and access to global alumni connections. This support includes the annual MBA Corporate Networking Breakfast, which features networking sessions, panel discussions, and coffee chats with subject matter experts and industry leaders.

“The Career & Life Design team was instrumental in my personal growth and leadership development. Through exceptional leadership coaching from the team, I overcame the challenges I faced. My coach helped me unlock new aspects of myself and transformed my approach to leadership and personal connections through tactical vulnerability and emotional intelligence,” said Christopher Andrade (MBA ’24), founder and lead instructor at Grassroot Peacebuilders.

Specialized learning

The Flexible MBA program offers eight specializations, preparing you to better understand a specific industry to support your career goals. Structured to help you build expertise, credibility, and a competitive edge in your chosen industry, these optional specializations allow you to shape your MBA experience around the type of work you want to do and the impact you want to make in society.

  • Artificial Intelligence for Business: Leverage cutting-edge AI tools to unlock insights, streamline operations, and lead innovation at the intersection of technology and strategy.
  • Business Analytics and Risk Management: Turn complex data into actionable intelligence and develop risk-resilient strategies that drive confident decision-making.
  • Entrepreneurship: Transform ideas into ventures with the resources, mentorship, and cross-disciplinary innovation that define Johns Hopkins.
  • Finance: Build advanced financial acumen rooted in analytical rigor and global market fluency to lead in corporate, investment, or nonprofit finance.
  • Health Care Management: Lead change in a dynamic health care ecosystem by integrating business expertise with the research-driven legacy of Johns Hopkins.
  • Leadership: Develop the vision, emotional intelligence, and strategic mindset to inspire teams and shape organizational outcomes.
  • Marketing: Combine data analytics and creative strategy to design customer-centric campaigns that drive growth and brand loyalty.
  • Real Estate: Gain specialized insight into markets, investments, and urban development to provide sustainable and impactful real estate decisions.

To complement online learning, several Flexible MBA courses include optional in-person or online residencies. Residencies typically span two days and include opportunities to learn directly from your professor, collaborate with your peers, and hear from industry experts with real-world experience. The residences are designed around three courses: Negotiation, Business Communication, and Leadership and Organizational Behavior.

“I have had the good fortune to meet and network with my classmates in Baltimore because of the Leadership and Organizational Behavior residency. The experience was invaluable. There was an aura of energy and exuberance that connected all of us as we exchanged proposals, solutions, and ideas. Our professor was brilliant, fun, and kept us engaged as she challenged our perspectives on leadership. The class was dynamic, and it motivated us to be more expressive with our ideas and what each one of us can bring to the table,” said MBA candidate Pria Fajardo.

Learn by doing: Experiential learning opportunities

Even in an online environment, experiential learning is embedded into the curriculum. Our online students can work directly with organizations to solve complex challenges and gain valuable business expertise through real-world consulting projects, global immersions, and case competitions.

Carey’s experiential learning courses focus on bringing the classroom to the field. And our students–both in-person and online–have completed over 200 on-site projects worldwide, bringing new perspectives and reshaping our understanding of industries. Some of our courses for online MBA students include:

  • Accelerated electives
  • Community Consulting Lab
  • Global Immersion
  • Hexcite
  • Leadership Development Expeditions
  • Residencies

Vivian Cabral, a current Flexible MBA student who participated in four global immersion courses, said she gained firsthand experience in international markets and developed a cross-cultural perspective that she might not have had the opportunity to do without the Flexible MBA program.

“Curating such a comprehensive itinerary reflects the extensive network and reputation of Johns Hopkins. These experiences have deepened my academic knowledge and developed my critical thinking skills, cross-cultural competence, and global mindset, which is essential for success in today’s interconnected business world. They are invaluable for future opportunities and collaborations,” Cabral said.

The application process for the Flexible MBA program is as flexible as the program itself. The program has multiple start terms per year, rolling admissions, and no GMAT or GRE requirements.
