Edam Kporku Vanderbilt University, Owen Graduate School of Management “A finance professional with a passion for cars and an almost insatiable level of curiosity.” Hometown: Dzodze, Ghana Fun Fact About Yourself: I’m a car enthusiast, and it’s quite a surprise to people that I have a finance background. I love diagnosing and fixing cars, and it is a pastime that lets me use my curiosity and problem-solving skills in a whole new way. There’s also something about the sound of a combustion engine that just gets me going. The power these machines make makes me feel alive and connected to them in unexplainable ways! Undergraduate School and Major: University of Ghana – Economics and Information Studies Most Recent Employer and Job Title: Constant Capital – Head of Investment Research What has been your favorite part of Nashville so far? Why? My favorite part of Nashville so far has been the opportunity to experience the four seasons. Coming from Ghana, a tropical country with warm weather all year-round, it has been fascinating to witness the different changes in nature and weather that each season brings. Beyond that, I find the skyline at night and the beautiful landscape just outside the city quite breathtaking. Aside from your classmates and location, what was the key part of Vanderbilt Owen’s MBA programming that led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? When I was exploring business schools, I knew I wanted an environment that emphasized collaboration among my peers and provided opportunities to develop my leadership skills. That’s one of the areas where Owen truly stood out for me. The small class size creates a close-knit and diverse community that thrives on collaboration, allowing me to share and learn from my peers in meaningful ways. On top of that, the Leadership Development Program offers incredible resources that are shaping my growth as a leader and preparing me for the challenges ahead What course, club or activity have you enjoyed the most so far at Vanderbilt Owen? Closing Bell, held on Thursday evenings, is one of the highlights of my week. I look forward to it because it offers a chance to unwind and relax in an informal setting with your peers after a busy and often intense week. Beyond that, Closing Bell creates a clear bridge for networking and connecting with faculty and staff, second-year MBAs, and specialized master’s students. These interactions have allowed me to build meaningful connections and learn from the experiences of others in a relaxed and enjoyable setting outside of the classroom. Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: Of all my achievements, the one that stands out to me the most throughout my career so far has been building the Research and Insights Unit at Apakan Securities. Leading the creation of this unit was a defining moment for both me and the firm. It established a structured framework for delivering in-depth macroeconomic and market insights, as well as providing actionable investment recommendations to our clients. For me, it was a test of how much work, creativity, and innovation I could bring to the table. I saw it as an opportunity to push myself beyond my comfort zone and create something impactful from the ground up. I pen this as a significant accomplishment because it enabled the firm to provide data-driven insights and recommendations to a vast group of stakeholders including asset managers, pension funds, and banks, empowering them to better optimize their investment portfolios. Leading this project required me to design processes, build databases, develop models, and mentor a team, all while ensuring the delivery of timely, accurate and actionable insights. The success of the Research and Analytics unit of Apakan Securities enhanced the firm’s reputation in the financial services space. Describe your biggest accomplishment as an MBA student so far? My biggest accomplishment as an MBA Candidate so far is the incredible amazing life-long friendships and connections I have been able to build along the way. The Owen MBA has brought together remarkable classmates who bring their unique experiences, ideas, and perspectives to the table. This diversity has been of immense benefit as we all navigate the MBA journey together. These friendships have offered me unwavering support, motivation, and a deep sense of belonging, while also playing a significant role in shaping my personal growth. The bonds I’ve formed at Owen have not only broadened my worldview, but also made me more culturally aware and empathetic. I truly believe these relationships have transformed my MBA experience into something far more meaningful and rewarding than I could have ever imagined. What has been your best memory as an MBA so far? The highlight of my MBA journey so far, among several other memorable experiences, is the annual Owen Holiday Party. It’s always fun to have everyone from the Owen community come together to celebrate the end of a long fall semester and the commencement of the holiday period.
