In Ibadan, Nigeria, where my story started, I once held a prime-time radio spot, my voice cutting through the airwaves as I dissected movies and TV shows with a critic’s edge and a storyteller’s passion. Those tales were my mold, shaping how I see the world, and none struck me like Vikings—its saga of ambition and legacy pulsing in sync with my own journey. So, to pull you, dear reader, into my tale and offer perspective, I cast myself as the Sojourning Son of Ragnar, now sharpening my blade at Rotman, pursuing an MBA to conquer new horizons. Let’s be straight: I am Nigerian, born and bred. No DNA or ancestry test will ever tie my blood to the icy fjords of Scandinavia or Ragnar Lothbrok’s Viking kin. Yet, in the marrow of my soul, I am a Lothbrok—a dreamer driven by the hunger to build something eternal. Let me tell you why. Komi Onipede A LOVE OF STORYTELLING My name is Komi, born in Ibadan, Nigeria—a city where history breathes beneath every brown roof scattered across its rugged mountains. Tales of warriors echo through Ibadan’s ancient streets, their courage woven into its very soul, shaping me from the start. At Nigeria’s first and finest university (University of Ibadan), I earned my bachelor’s in Adult Education, English Language, and Literature. There, in halls buzzing with ideas, I fell in love with storytelling and saw history as a living force – not just dusty pages, but a compass, guiding the present and future. After university, I plunged into the fast-paced world of First Bank of Nigeria as a retail banker, leading teams in marketing, operations, and finance. It was steady, but my spirit stirred restlessly. I craved a legacy that could outlast fleeting wins—a saga for generations. That’s when the Sojourning Son of Ragnar awoke within me. THE INSPIRATION OF RAGNAR LOTHBROK For those new to Ragnar Lothbrok, here’s the spark of his legend. Ragnar was a farmer in the harsh, wild lands of Scandinavia, where brutal winters forced his people to raid neighboring lands for survival. But Ragnar dreamed bigger. He yearned for a sustainable future, one his descendants could inherit. He rallied his clan to sail perilous seas, seeking lands to claim, farm, and call home. That vision gave birth to the epic of Ragnar, the Vikings, and the world they reshaped. So, where do I fit as a son of Ragnar? Like him, I’m a first-generation dreamer from an ancient city, my roots deep in Ibadan’s warrior soil. I burn to build something enduring—not just for me, but for those who’ll carry my name forward, a legacy of global conquest and stability. This fire has carried me across borders: I earned a master’s degree in Marketing and Communication in Italy, then moved to England, where I worked in climate communications, crafting stories that bridge worlds. There, I honed my voice in PR and communications, navigating new lands with grit. Now, at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School, I’m forging a new arsenal, and oh, what a forge it is—an overload of paradigm shifts, if I must say! The Rotman School is located in downtown Toronto, the 2nd-largest financial centre in North America A VOYAGE INTO THE SECOND YEAR Rotman is my crucible, hammering out skills to conquer the modern world. In Strategy, I’m learning to chart uncharted seas, plotting moves like a chieftain planning a raid. Finance—both corporate and investing—teaches me to wield capital like a shield, building wealth with precision. Data and Statistics are my oracles, revealing patterns in the chaos to guide my decisions. Negotiations? That’s my battle-axe, sharpened to carve out deals and alliances. Sustainability is my North Star, ensuring the lands I claim thrive for generations. And Accounting—the notorious language of business—is my saga’s ledger, tracking every move with clarity. Each course, each lesson, is a spark, reshaping my mind and arming me to rewrite my generation’s story. Of all my voyages, Rotman’s been the most transformative. It has given me the tools and confidence to craft a narrative that endures, to claim my place in the world’s vast saga. My name is Komi, the Sojourning Son of Ragnar Lothbrok.
