2025 MBA To Watch: George Warshaw, Hong Kong University Business School

George Warshaw

HKU Business School, University of Hong Kong

A curious-minded optimist and an extrovert who doesn’t seek attention, I enjoy bringing people together.”

Hometown: London UK

Fun fact about yourself: I have a tattoo that I can use to measure the regulation height of a tennis net!

Undergraduate School and Degree: Durham University, UK – BA (Hons) Human Geography

Where was the last place you worked before enrolling in business school? Nord Anglia Education – Regional Director, APAC

Where did you intern during the summer of 2024? N/A

Where will you be working after graduation? I have an aspiration to become a senior sales and marketing leader in a dynamic and forward-thinking industry, with a preference for an additional CRM system integration/optimisation role.

Community Work and Leadership Roles in Business School: Leadership & Development Course certification. Elected class representative to represent MBA full time student body on academic and super-curricular content feedback to senior leadership, as well as organized our three major social events of the year. Head of the 24/25 HKU MBA Tennis Squad.

Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school? I’m most proud of inspiring over half my cohort to learn and regularly play tennis through weekly tennis workshops that I set up. It was the most popular student-run MBA activity in the year! For some I’m sure it will be a lifelong pursuit (not to mention a superb ongoing networking activity).

What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career? Whilst working for a major international education company, I had the opportunity to act as the sales lead in a competitive tender process to run the international student pathway programmes for my alma mater. Thanks in a large part to my proposal, we secured the multimillion-pound tender and had one of the most successful first intakes for any UK international pathway centre; with over 430 students in the first cohort.

Why did you choose this business school? I chose HKU Business School for its international reputation, rich history, superior regional business links and cohort diversity.

Who was your favorite MBA professor? It’s got to be Professor Alex Chan, who taught us corporate Finance. From a non-finance background, I was concerned that I was going to be unable to keep up with the content. However, Professor Chan was very supportive and offered additional meeting times outside the lectures to review the content, which I gladly took him up on. He kept track of my individual progress and took the time to comment directly to me on my strong mid-course exam performance.

What was your favorite course as an MBA? Analytics for Managers taught by Weiming Zhu. His lectures were so interesting and engaging, with a constant stream unique practical use-cases referenced. I felt that what I was learning was at the very forefront of the techniques used in analytics, with the use of LLMs in his teaching being a fascinating learning process.

What was your favorite MBA event or tradition at your business school? The career mentor networking event was such a great opportunity to meet with business leaders of so many different industries in a fun and intimate setting. It was great to witness our cohort making so many valuable introductions of their personal mentors to their fellow classmates.

Looking back over your MBA experience, what is the one thing you’d do differently and why? I regret not taking full advantage of the international exchange programme offered by my MBA. Studying abroad in such prestigious overseas Universities such as Columbia Business School would have given me invaluable exposure to different cultures and business practices – however as a new father, I am not able to spend months away from home!

What is the biggest myth about your school? One myth I’ve heard about the HKU MBA is that it’s a traditional, lecture-heavy programme. However, the truth couldn’t be more different! The HKU MBA is highly interactive, with case studies, real-world applications, group projects, and experiential learning opportunities that make it dynamic and practical.

What did you love most about your business school’s town? The mix of the urban and pristine nature in such close proximity. Most people think of Hong Kong as an urban jungle, but beautiful beaches and hiking trails always just a short minibus/metro ride away from the dense city.

What is one way that your business school has integrated AI into your programming? What insights did you gain from using AI? The business analytics course actively encouraged the use of AI to support with statistical analysis. Using a largely “no code” teaching method, we were able to effectively use prompts in a LLM to generate advanced statistical analysis within R Studio. It was the most innovative use of AI that I’ve ever come across.

Which MBA classmate do you most admire? Anu Hodge – she’s had a very successful career at the same time as being a “super-parent”. Despite busy family life she’s always willing to contribute to class discussions and goes out of her way to lead in celebrating classmate milestones. She’s always there to offer support and insights and is very generous in sharing her valuable experience with the cohort.

What are the top two items on your professional bucket list? I want to become a global sales and marketing leader, and in at least 2 more innovative industries to my current one.

What made George such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2025?

“George is a very enthusiastic MBA student both inside and outside classroom. He participates actively to in-class discussion by given quality feedback. He is one of the class representatives and is very responsible in organizing various events for MBA students. He is willing to take advice from our Career Team which assist him to further solidify his career goals. I fully support this nomination.”

Ms. Josephine CHAN
