Columbia is the most recent business school to bet yes by: P&Q Staff on September 01, 2026 | 3 minute read September 1, 2026 Copy Link Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email Share on LinkedIn Share on WhatsApp Share on Reddit NAVIGATING THE NEW MBA LANDSCAPE: COLUMBIA’S INNOVATIVE PROGRAM Can MBA students really have their cake and eat it too? This week, we dive into Columbia Business School’s new professional MBA program that allows working professionals to engage in a full-time MBA experience without leaving their jobs. A GAME-CHANGER FOR WORKING PROFESSIONALS Columbia has launched a cohort-based MBA where full-time employment isn’t just encouraged; it’s required. Maria Wich-Vila from ApplicantLab emphasizes the significance of this move, stating: “It’s fantastic that Columbia has decided to launch this program…the only option in New York was the NYU part-time MBA. This is a wonderful hybrid.” This new format aims to foster relationships akin to those in traditional full-time programs, while also accommodating the busy lives of professionals. BALANCING WORK & STUDY The program’s structure includes two evening classes per week and intensive long weekends in the first year. Maria highlights the challenge applicants might face, suggesting: “Can I handle effectively doing the equivalence of an MBA in terms of the academics while handling my job?” She encourages potential students to be honest about their commitments and consider a trial run to gauge their readiness for this rigorous schedule. PROS & CONS OF THE NEW APPROACH Caroline Diarte Edwards from Fortuna Admissions points out both advantages and drawbacks to this professional MBA format. On the positive side, students can immediately apply their classroom learning to their jobs, enhancing retention and understanding. However, she notes: “The social experience might not be as intense as a full-time program where everyone is fully immersed.” This means that while you gain valuable skills, the network-building opportunities may differ from those found in a traditional setting. THE BROADER TREND The launch of Columbia’s program is not an isolated event. Maria suggests this shift is driven by current economic uncertainties, noting: “People are extra afraid to leave jobs that may not be there for them in two years if they were to take a full two years off.” This sentiment reflects a growing trend among top business schools to offer flexible options that cater to the evolving needs of students in a rapidly changing job market. Columbia’s professional MBA is set to begin in the summer of 2027, with applications opening on September 3rd. It marks a significant step in the evolution of MBA programs, offering a promising alternative for those hesitant to step away from their careers. As you contemplate your educational journey, consider how this innovative approach might fit into your life. For a deeper dive into this discussion, listen to the full episode.
