The Scheller MBA: What You Need To Know

Every business school talks about technology, but few embrace it quite so fully as Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business, established in 1913. Atlanta is a thriving international city awash with restaurants, bars, museums, acres of green space, and endless entertainment. It’s also home to award-winning restaurants, world-class museums, acres of green space, and endless entertainment. At Scheller, you have the best of both worlds.

The school is located in the middle of Atlanta’s Tech Square district, – 1.4 million square feet of space that’s home to 100 startups, 50 accelerators and incubators, and the R&D wings of companies like AT&T, Chick-fil-A, Delta Air Lines, and The Home Depot.

Not content with this, Georgia Tech has begun the process of building a new two-tower complex in Tech Square that will add another 400,000 square feet for use by Scheller students, faculty, and staff. The first new building is expected to open in 2022.

Scheller’s program has its fair share of tech-focused courses, especially when it comes to electives. MBAs can choose from eight immersive tracks that consist of four related electives, including Business Analytics, Innovating for Sustainability, Leading New Ventures, and Supply Chain Innovation. Tracks supplement academic work with projects with businesses, talks and panels featuring guest speakers, and networking events.

Many students are also selected for the TI:GER (Technology Innovation: Generating Economic Results) STEM concentration in Strategy and Innovation. TI:GER is a 16-month program that brings together Scheller MBAs and Georgia Tech PhDs to work on technology-innovation projects. Given Georgia Tech’s engineering, analytics, computing, cybersecurity, and biomedical research specializations, spots are in hot demand.

Students can cluster electives in concentrations that consist of three electives centered on a particular area. Some are functional, such as Accounting, Finance, or Marketing, and others are interdisciplinary, such as Cross-Cultural Human Resources Management, Entrepreneurship, International Business, Quantitative Finance, and Strategic Sustainability. Ultimately, students take a total of 11 electives, giving the intellectually curious plenty of space to explore.

Scheller’s experiential learning comes largely in the form of “practicums” — semester-long consulting projects involving real-life problems. Students work alongside businesses gaining insight and great networking opportunities. Practicum topics range from IT and operations to strategic management, pro bono consulting, and more.

Of course, all of this is aimed at channeling MBAs into great jobs. Scheller is renowned for its top-notch careers service. As soon as students begin the program, they are assigned a career coach. These advisors also work closely with companies, so they understand the skills that are in demand and find the employers that are the right fit for students.
