I spent my first 3 years out of undergrad at MBB, but made the jump to buy-side this time last year. Now I work on the investment team at a middle-market PE fund. I went to a very large state school that’s respected in my state, but unsure it if has much clout elsewhere.

Hi Mr. MBB to PE, Kristen from MBA Prep School here. I’m not overly concerned about your undergrad reputation negatively impacting your odds at your target schools. The fact that an MBB hired you from what I am assuming is not a feeder school is impressive and you had solid career progression while there. Your nearly perfect GPA and 740 GMAT should be more than enough evidence that you can do the work. Additionally, you’ve made a career pivot that many applicants pursue an MBA in order to make. You’ll bring desirable experiences and a sought-after network to your classmates. I also love that you were engaged in volunteer work both within the firm and with the Boys and Girls Club independently. The icing on …
The icing on the cake is that your former firm will sponsor your MBA and give you an offer to return. Sponsorship is typically a solid criteria for weeding through the multitude of consultant applications, and there should be no concern about your employability post-MBA. A bigger question you will need to address is why you want to go back to MBB after having left, and what is motivating you to head to CPG (and why start your own company as well). It seems like there is a story there that I can’t access with the limited information provided, but you will want to make sure that path is crystal clear and be specific about what resources each school offers that will help you get there. I think your chances are very good if you can tell this cohesive story. I would be happy to offer you a complimentary consultation if you would like to chat further about your application strategy.
GPA is a bit low, have you considered HBX Core?
