Mr. Politics Abroad

About Me:

Hey! Political professional in a non-US major Western country looking for a change. I’ve worked in my country’s national politics for over three years and work in the Prime Minister’s Office as a junior staffer; no direct reports but the PM reads the things I write, which are typically but not always on relatively minor issues.

Undergrad School: Intensive small liberal arts college

Undergrad Major: International Relations

GPA: 4.2/4.3

GRE: 332

Age: 24,  Ethnicity: White

Extracurriculars: Little since graduation. Significant immigrant/refugee support work prior.

Work History:

Title: Special Assistant, Prime Minister's Office

Industry: Government / Military

Company: Politics/government

Length of Employment: 1 yr, 6 mos

Title: Various jobs, National Politics

Industry: Government / Military

Company: Politics/government

Length of Employment: 2 yrs

Big Life Wins:

Successfully taught myself multiple languages to high proficiency. Managed the Field program for a local campaign in the last election (we lost but way overshot expectations). Minored in Math and in Econ, so I have demonstrable quant skills

Post MBA Goal:

Exclusively applying to programs with strong energy and sustainability options. Consulting or direct energy industry immediately post MBA, venture capital and entrepreneurship farther down the line, senior leadership in government maybe one day.

Not knowing what “intensive small liberal arts college” you went to is a big unknown. If it is highly selective and highly regarded, that could make the difference for you at Stanford. Your GPA is solid and so is your GRE score which is above the class average at the GSB by two points. I am assuming you are a European which is also a plus. I think a lot of your chances are dependent on your undergrad college and how you leverage your “significant immigrant/refugee” work. Many successful Stanford applicants have an X factor of some sort. Your refugee …
