Originally from the Midwest, I got involved in politics over 5 years ago. I worked for a Congressman and was given increasing responsibilities. I then advised his US Senate campaign on policy, and upon winning the race, became an advisor on national security issues in the Senate. I recently accepted a job at a major trade association doing International Relations.

In my time in Congress, I had the privilege of working on really interesting projects, including the establishment of the US Space Force. Also led a division of a foreign policy non-profit – a great learning experience. And in my new job, Iāve traveled around the world meeting with foreign governments on energy policy/regulations.
Honestly, I need to do some introspection here. I know long-term Iād like to make a difference back in the Midwest, perhaps in a role helping companies expand operations/sales internationally.

Hi Mr. National Security Advisor, Julie-Anne Heafey here with mbaMission. You seem to bring some really unique experiences to the table – not everyone can say they offer a midwest perspective and experience in the Senate working on the Space Force! So – your differentiation potential is strong, and I think you’d probably make an amazing list for Fuqua of “25 random things.” I also love that you’ve done CORe, which will help to show your academic readiness for business school, and somewhat offset your lower-than-average stats. Your GPA is a little low although within the 80% range of 3.1-3.87, and your GMAT is too but definitely closer than I’d prefer to the bottom of the limit (660-740). Any chance …

Beyond that, the main issue I see is definitely your goals – making a difference in the midwest just sounds super vague, as you suggest. Would love to have you spend some time exploring, talking to people, and clarifying your vision. If you can do that, I’d put your odds a bit higher than the average. Good luck!!
Mr. National Security Advisor – Susan Cera, Director of MBA Admissions, here. Having spent 10 years working on admissions committee at Duke Fuqua, I know there is a lot they will like about your profile – international exposure, military experience. While the HBS CORe demonstrates that you have can do the work (I’m curious as to what grade you received), your 670 GMAT combined with a softer GPA will give admissions pause. A few suggestions to improve your chances beyond the 25% I noted: 1) Retake the GMAT and get to at least 700, 2) Clarify your goals then connect them with resources at Fuqua – both curriculum, clubs and activities you hope to participate in AND how you will contribute to the Fuqua …

If you do all of these things, I think you can improve your odds to >50%. All the best!
