Currently an accountant with three years of experience consisting of 2 years in public accounting (National firm but not Big 4) and a little over a year in private industry. I worked for a F500 hospitality company as a senior accountant working with various hotels and tech startups. I was let go due to Covid and I am now working as an accountant for a tech startup, also in a senior accountant role. This pandemic has forced me to look inward and I have realized I want to put my business skills to use in the medical field, working for a non-profit focused on a rare genetic disease I live with. To have an impact in this role I first want to work for a top management consulting firm and learn how to solve an organization’s most pressing problems.

Hi Mr. Not Your Dad’s CPA, Melisa here from Stratus Admissions. You are not alone in reflecting during Covid on how you want to make an impact. Many of my clients this year have done soul searching through lay-offs, personal experiences and all the events of the last year. In career changing, I think it is important to be able to show a personal tie to what you want to change to and show that you have built skills that can be leveraged into your post-MBA career. Based on what I see here, you have both. I would encourage you to be clear about what has inspired you through Covid to make an impact on your rare genetic disorder. As consulting is a common goal …
As consulting is a common goal for business schools, you want to be clear about what you hope to gain as a consultant to be successful in your long term goal of working in a non-profit – make this story authentic to you. Also think about what skills as an accountant do you have that will leverage into consulting. Your pricing project sounds like a good example of you leading a team to a solution, search out more opportunities here. The good news is a start up generally allows you to jump in and help in new areas. All of this is also to help highlight your leadership. Love that you started the Brazilian jiu-jitsu club in undergrad, which shows leadership and involvement in undergrad. What is not apparent is your involvement in the community since undergrad (unless you are tutoring now). This is an opportunity for you. Is there a way to get involved in a non-profit now related to your genetic disorder. This will also give you insight into what is currently happening in that space. You’ve chosen target schools that you will be competitive at, assuming you achieve your target GMAT. I do think this is important for you as GMAT averages from finance applicants tend to be at or above the averages. Wish you the best of luck and reach out if I can answer any questions!
