I think your background as a first generation college student who obviously did very well in a rigorous undergraduate curriculum will be a big plus in the MBA admissions process. I also think your strong experience as a leader in the energy field will be seen as a bonus as your industry is not over represented in the applicant pool. But at a school like Yale, the 690 will hold you back as you’ve heard. If INSEAD doesn’t work out, have you thought about programs like Stanford’s MsX or Executive MBA programs? I think your background as a first generation college student who obviously did very well in a rigorous undergraduate curriculum will be a big plus in the MBA admissions process. I also think your strong experience as a leader in the energy field will be seen as a bonus as your industry is not over represented in the applicant pool. But at a school like Yale, the 690 will hold you back as you’ve heard. If INSEAD doesn’t work out, have you thought about programs like Stanford’s MsX or Executive MBA programs? The average age of students at these programs are older and you would find your peers have your level of professional experience. They can also be more forgiving of lower GMAT scores and you still get the name brand of a degree from a top school. Just food for thought…good luck!

I think you’re doing the right thing with targeting INSEAD. They tend to like older candidates and they can be a little more flexible on GMAT score. HOWEVER. I get a little nervous when someone is both older than the average and then has a GMAT score sub-700. At a school like Yale, this could be really tough. At INSEAD, I’d feel more comfortable if you could get the GMAT up a bit. I’ve seen candidates from South America be successful with <700 GMATs before but still…it can be tough and I want you to give yourself the best possible shot at this very competitive process.

You will also be attractive to Yale, but your GMAT will be a bigger detraction with their average at 720. If you are interested in expanding your school choice, you may want to consider McCombs or Fuqua.
