    Mr. Petroleum Engineer:
Emily here, Master Consultant at The MBA Exchange. I think your background as a first generation college student who obviously did very well in a rigorous undergraduate curriculum will be a big plus in the MBA admissions process. I also think your strong experience as a leader in the energy field will be seen as a bonus as your industry is not over represented in the applicant pool. But at a school like Yale, the 690 will hold you back as you’ve heard. If INSEAD doesn’t work out, have you thought about programs like Stanford’s MsX or Executive MBA programs? Hello Mr. Petroleum Engineer!
Krista Nannery from mbaMission here. Thanks for posting.
I think you’re doing the right thing with targeting INSEAD. They tend to like older candidates and they can be a little more flexible on GMAT score. HOWEVER. I get a little nervous when someone is both older than the average and then has a GMAT score sub-700. At a school like Yale, this could be really tough. At INSEAD, I’d feel more comfortable if you could get the GMAT up a bit. I’ve seen candidates from South America be successful with <700 GMATs before but still…it can be tough and I want you to give yourself the best possible shot at this very competitive process.
    Hope that helps!

Hi Mr. Petroleum Engineer, Melisa from Stratus Admissions. As a Columbian, 1st generation engineer, I think you are going to be an attractive candidate for INSEAD. Your years of experience are on the high side, with their average at 5.6, but at 30 your average age is not far off. Your solid GPA in engineering is a plus and with your professional experience helps prove you can handle the academic rigor of the INSEAD program, which at 10 months is known to be rigorous. I donā€™t love that your GMAT is lower than the average by 20 points ā€“ you may want to reconsider taking it again. This could maybe be overcome with strong stories of your experiences and what you would bring to INSEAD. …
