Hi Design Engineer, this is Deepak Punwani from MBA Exchange. Am sorry to rain on your parade but at this point of time am not seeing a lot of “gold dust” on your profile to help get that admit from Kellogg and other top 10 schools. The GPA seems on the lower side and it doesn’t seem that your school will be a feeder school for Kellogg so you may not get that benefit of doubt for your GPA. Your professional achievements are very noteworthy but Ideo may be more impressed by them than the adcom at Kellogg. You extra curricular activities are also fairly run of the mill and except your passion for design, haven’t got a sense of who you are as …

Your professional achievements are very noteworthy but Ideo may be more impressed by them than the adcom at Kellogg. You extra curricular activities are also fairly run of the mill and except your passion for design, haven’t got a sense of who you are as an individual and what drives you. On a positive note, the GRE is very good and if you have 85 percentile plus on both sections, you dont need to take it again. I would urge you to look for more “spikes” in your profile and then execute well to increase your chances at Kellogg. good luck
Hello Mr. Design Geek! Thanks for posting. Krista Nannery from mbaMission here. I love your international experience and your patents. I think that will help set you apart in this process. That being said, in these very one-dimensional reviews, your 3.2 (equivalent) GPA worries me a bit. That puts you at the very bottom of the 80th percentile range for most top schools. (Generally, 3.2 to 3.8.) So…for someone like you, without knowing more, my suggestion would be to broaden your school strategy. If you are truly the unicorn I have always been waiting for, add GSB. But if you feel there are some hiccups in your profile, add schools like Ross and Haas. I like that you have Darden on your list already. Great …

Hi Mr. Design Geek, Melisa from Stratus Admissions here. I think you’ve got a lot of pieces to put together a solid application for Kellogg, however you have to overcome your lower GPA and an average GRE, in a highly competitive demographic. I like that you can show promotions through your job titles, Kellogg will be looking for where you have been able to lead impactful change – so make sure that this comes out in your essays. Your international experience is definitely a plus. In order to put together a compelling story for yourself, I would suggest a couple areas to focus on. It looks like you’ve had some great achievements as you’ve listed here. I’d want to dig in further to understand what …
I’d want to dig in further to understand what you learned. As an engineer, you will want to make sure you can speak about your achievements in lay-person terms and minimize the tech speak. Having had a foot in both the engineering and business world, I’ve worked with lots of engineers to tell their stories to bring out their impact without sounding too technical. Kellogg will really value your extracurricular activities and achievements, so make sure they are a part of your story. It sounds like you have some different thoughts on your goals – spend some time to narrow in on what you want to do post-MBA. I like business design for you with your product development experience – you can really bring a lot of experience to the table at Kellogg and grow there. You need to be clear with your goals so that you can articulate what an MBA program will do for you to achieve these goals – think gap analysis. With strong essays, I think you are at Kellogg’s 20% acceptance rate. An improved GRE score could bring that up. I like Fuqua and Darden and with these 2 you have good chances to land in a program. One additional school you may want to consider is Tepper.
