My family was targeted in the Cultural Revolution. My great grandfather’s company still exists today as one of the largest international F&B brands in the world. My family fled to the US, and I grew up poor as an East Asian/Native Hawaiian. Had to hustle all of my life. Put myself through college, started FT at a tech company as a college junior.

One of my proudest accomplishments in life is mentoring a student in this capacity. He worked at Academy and was looking for any career assistance. I taught him everything he needed to know to ace the consulting interview, and referred him to the global consultancy I worked at. He's since fulfilled his dream of moving to Denver to work in tech.
Title: Consultant
Industry: Consulting
Company: Boutique Firm
Length of Employment: 2 yrs, 1 mos
Title: Senior Analyst
Company: Global
Length of Employment: 1 yr, 2 mos
Joined a global tech consultancy out of undergrad. Received a 6 mo. promotion to Senior Analyst and was poached by a competitor as a consultant, hitting consultant level at 1 year out of undergrad. Have since been a top performer fulfilling SME/Lead type roles, including Analytics Lead for an O&G super’s PMO with $2b~ in its portfolio.
I’m now confident that I could stay in tech/tech consulting and be comfortable. However, a top MBA would allow me to chase a pipe dream of mine. M7 MBA to MBB. There, build a network, sharpen my skills, accrue capital, perhaps get experience in F&B. One day, enter the F&B industry and perhaps continue my great grandfather’s legacy.

Your personal narrative is compelling and admirable–and so are your accomplishments at work. Your basic stats are obviously on target so the only issues here are silver rather than gold credentials. You went to a non-feeder college that was not selective. If you are a first generation college graduate in your family, along with coming from humble circumstances, that is totally understandable and more than okay. It won’t be counted against you. But if you are not, that’s a tough place to start from for an M7 admission. And then you obviously work not for MBB or Deloitte or Accenture or AT Kearney but a boutique consulting shop. None of this is bad. I’m just pointing out that you will be competing for a spot …
I’m just pointing out that you will be competing for a spot at Booth and the other schools on your target list with candidates who went to Princeton or Yale, landed jobs at MBB and are effectively on that feeder track for an M7 admit. That is all why your personal story–along with the personal motivations that led to your volunteer work as a mentor to others–is so important to your success in gaining an invite to the club. You need to tell that story well to get you out of the pile of applicants and into the pile of admits. Given your success at work, I would think you would have no trouble gaining very strong recommendations from your supervisor at work. That, too, would be an essential part of amplifying and reinforcing your personal story. Good luck to you. I’m really rooting for you.

I think you could craft a very compelling story around wanting to build upon your grandfather’s legacy. I would avoid bringing up mention of wealth or capital outright, though, in your essays. Might be worth looking at LBS or INSEAD too, if you’re willing to go international; MBBs recruit well from these schools & it could give you the exposure to building global connections that would be valuable later on re: F&B supply chains.
