I have been a Navy SEAL for 20 years, with the last 13 years as a member of Naval Special Warfare Developments Group. I have extensive experience in managing cross-functional teams, including international members, through the planning and execution of projects in arduous environments around the world. In the past year, I have transitioned into a military acquisitions role, serving as an active-duty advisor for several multi-million dollar projects. I have considered an EMBA given my age, but having completed my undergrad online, I long for a fully immersive experience. Because I am retiring from the Navy and using the G.I. Bill, I will not have to work.

Several years ago, a friend shared that someone close to them lost their teenage daughter in a car crash. The girl had been a big supporter of Tom Brady’s charity while alive, and in lieu of flowers, the family asked that all donations go to the charity. Knowing the head of security for Gillette Stadium at the time, I was able to arrange the opportunity for her brothers to meet with Tom Brady. I never met the family, but knowing I could make an impact was one of the most satisfying feelings I have ever felt.
Throughout my career, I have witnessed many in my profession succumb to mental health problems. Furthermore, I was one of the many who suffered as well. This allowed me to observe first-hand, gaps in preventative mental health care and risk-management practices. When I recovered, I became passionate about the possibility of preventing others from going through what I did. With my passion for problem-solving and analytics, I intend to begin my own business focused on innovative solutions to address these gaps at their source.

Hi Mr. Special Operations, this is Kristen from MBA Prep School. Firstly, thank you for your service. Your experience as a SEAL has no doubt provided many opportunities to display leadership, and your goals for improving access to mental health services are incredibly noble. The Admissions Committee will be thinking about how you will mix with classmates who are 10 years your junior. One thing you have going for you is the fact that you aren’t planning to recruit for traditional post-MBA roles and instead plan to go the entrepreneurial route. Your experience as a SEAL has no doubt provided many opportunities to display leadership, and your goals for improving access to mental health services are incredibly noble. That being said, your work experience far surpasses the average at the programs you’ve listed. The Admissions Committee will be thinking about how you will mix with classmates who are 10 years your junior. One thing you have going for you is the fact that you aren’t planning to recruit for traditional post-MBA roles and instead plan to go the entrepreneurial route. I wonder if you have considered programs like the MIT Sloan Fellows Program or Stanford MSx, which are full-time, immersive MBA programs for experienced, high-potential leaders. Students in these programs tend to have an average of 14 years of experience and because the programs are full-time there is no requirement to be employed full-time. Both would offer you great resources for your entrepreneurial interests as well. I think your odds are better at programs like these, where your amount of work experience will better align with your classmates. You might also think about Cornell’s 1 year Accelerated MBA program.
