Hi Mr. Worker Bee! This is Kate Richardson, Senior Admissions Consultant. Nice to come across a fellow Illinois grad here! Sounds like you’ve explored much beyond Illinois and I think Columbia will especially love that international experience you’ve had. I’ve worked with a lot of Big 4 applicants, it’s a pretty well-represented pool, but it sounds like you’ve been a top performer. I also think the practice areas you’ve been with (M&A and Transfer Pricing) are known for selecting top candidates and offering experience that should translate well to a strategy consulting role. Regarding extracurriculars, if “heavily involved” means a leadership role, then that will look great. If not, that could be an area that is lacking, especially if you don’t have other activities outside …

If not, that could be an area that is lacking, especially if you don’t have other activities outside the firm. Your Econ GPA looks great. I wish your GMAT was just a bit higher for Columbia. Is retaking an option? Again, because you’re applying from a well-represented pool, you don’t want to be stuck just below the average. I’m assuming you haven’t applied yet, in which case take advantage of this Spring (since you’re in NYC) to visit Columbia and network heavily with current students. If you are willing to apply early decision, that could also give your odds a bit of a boost. All in all, I feel pretty good about your chances, so I’m putting them about 2x of Columbia’s 19% acceptance rate. With a higher GMAT, I think you’d be looking at 50%+ odds. Good luck!
Mr. Worker Bee – Susan Cera, Director of MBA Admissions, here. I think your global exposure is very interesting, especially the fact that you have lived in 10 different countries! For CBS, my concern is that your stats and work are a bit on the softer side. Furthermore, I suggest that you might benefit from clarifying your goals. There are a LOT of candidates who want to go into ‘strategy consulting’ are a dime a dozen. Having a more specific goal that aligns with your personal and professional experience to date will enable you to stand out in the eyes of admissions committee. All the best!
