High energy and out there, I think I was born to be an MBA student. I attended law school soon after graduating college but nothing about the academics or the profession lit a spark in me. I enjoy the business side of things way more and am currently working in a large consulting firm in Risk consulting, which was an easy bridge to cross from the law.

After graduating college, I spent some time clerking at a top regional law firm and interning at a well-known strategy consulting firm. I was excited to be admitted to a prestigious law school, and upon graduating began working at a global professional services firm where I earned an early rank promotion and glowing reviews.
While I enjoy consulting, I find Risk in particular to be a little dull. I’m looking to use the MBA to move to something more exciting and cutting edge. I would like to move into media/tech consulting, particularly at a top firm, using my law background as a selling point as this space is becoming increasingly more regulated.

Hi Ms. Dreamer, This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. You have strong credentials, having already a law degree and experience in risk consulting. The Admissions Committee (AdCom) will for sure want to better understand your long-term career goals, and why an MBA makes sense for you right now. I like that you’re planning to leverage your legal background to focus on a regulated industry like tech/media. It also sounds like you may have done some “business” things at your work – you can use some of these examples in your essays to explain to AdCom why you prefer the business side. If you can put together a coherent, compelling story of how you plan to contribute your business and legal skills to the industry, …

Ms. Dreamer – thanks for posting your profile. Susan Cera here from Stratus.
You have a unique academic and professional trajectory for an MBA candidate. As an older applicant, you will need to demonstrate why NOW is the right time for you to get an MBA. I’m curious about what you have done other than risk consulting since the typical years of undergrad (finishing at say 22) then three years of law school (finishing at 25) would put you at closer to 5 years of work experience. Perhaps I’m missing something.

In the end your success will come down to connecting the dots between what you have done to date through an MBA to your dream post-MBA position. I don’t see any particular reason you want to get into tech/media consulting. If you can put together a compelling narrative I think you may have some choices to make when decisions come out.
Wishing you all the best on your MBA application journey.
