The Cox School of Business MBA: What You Need To Know

Southern Methodist University is considered one of the U.S. South’s hidden gems. SMU’s University Park campus consists of over 100 buildings on 237 acres, just five miles north of downtown Dallas. The Cox MBA was built on three foundational pillars – leadership, analytics and experiential learning.

The full-time MBA spans 22 months with 61-credits total. About five years ago, the curriculum was redesigned intentionally to fill in the gaps where employers saw the need. After numerous structured interviews with corporate partners across a variety of sectors, the curriculum was redesigned to give MBAs the skills where the majority of employers felt graduates were lacking – with creative complex problem-solving, effective communication, working collaboratively, and adapting to changing priorities.

Experiential learning is a core of the curriculum, and no challenge is deemed too big – Cox recognizes that many challenges in the business world are ambiguous and unstructured for their MBAs. Outside of core courses, students are required to participate in a summer internship and complete seven or eight electives.

Cox MBAs can customize their degree through concentrations in Accounting, Finance, ITOM: Business Analytics, ITOM: Supply Chain, Management, Marketing, Real Estate, and Strategy & Entrepreneurship.

During the first and second semesters at Cox, MBAs travel to the region of their choice – either India, East Asia, Latin America or Europe during the Global Leadership Program, where they consult for a global organization. While abroad, the daily itinerary includes meetings with C-level executives, discussions with government officials on political policies influencing the region, and tours of important cultural and historical sites.

Unique to Cox, each year, approximately 20 full-time and Professional MBA students are selected for the MBA Practicum in Portfolio Management course to manage the Nancy Chambers Underwood Graduate Fund – established in 1972, the $6 million fund is one of the oldest student-managed portfolios in the country.

SMU Cox is home to numerous Centers and Institutes that offer opportunities for research and writing, conferences, periodic lectures and symposia within the realms of entrepreneurship, leadership, energy, real estate, customer engagement, financial studies, economic freedom just to name a few.

“My experience at SMU Cox has been simply amazing. Great education, great classmates, and great professors that can help accomplish your career goals. You are exposed to world class education, while spring boarding your career,” says Akinwonuola Awujoola, Class of 2021 on Cox’s site.
