They read essays, compared scores, and interviewed candidates. Eventually, they lobbied the committee for their personal favorites. To outsiders, the process was shrouded in secrecy, where one detail could derail a candidacy. And every candidate who missed the cut wondered what they could’ve done to improve their chances.
