Grade Inflation

Inflated GPAs Good For MBA Applicants?

Ever notice how pundits use “grade inflation” as a derogatory term?  In a world where children receive trophies for participating, grade inflation is a symptom, if not a symbol, of entitled youth. Alas, these critics harken back to their school days, when they’d plow through a 15-page reading list, while scrubbing bathroom stalls to pay tuition. “These kids are soft,” they say. “They’re ill-equipped to make it in the big, bad world.”

Who knows, maybe professors are more generous graders…especially now that students can strike back with lawsuits (and catty comments on Rate My Professors). Yes, grades can be a political calculation and a negation as a much as a verdict these days. But is that necessarily a bad thing for students?

Not if you’re applying for business school.

According to a recent academic study from HBS and Haas, students who graduate from more lenient institutions stand a better chance of being accepted into business school. So what are the implications of this study on admissions officers and applicants? And what other biases did this study uncover? Click on the link below to learn more.
