Focus of current case: Identifying the best expansion plan for a higher education institution

Why did you choose to work at Bain?

After working in financial services for seven years, I wanted three things of my next career move: to maintain an overarching goal of generating significant impact in whichever organization I worked, to gain experience in different industries and verticals, and to do both in a context that would not be a step forward in my career. I was correct in hypothesizing Bain would provide all three.

What lesson from business school best prepared you for your career at Bain?

Learning the right balance of humility and confidence.

1) Humility: MIT Sloan has so many brilliant, accomplished people that helped me understand how big and full of opportunities the world is, and how imperative it is not to underestimate or oversimplify the complex problems we face.

2) Confidence: Business school helped me to better get to know my strengths and hone my skills.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned so far at Bain?

I have had the opportunity to visit some of my current client’s branches in locations ranging from downtown in state capitals to remote towns that are a 4-hour drive and 2-hour boat ride from the nearest airport.

I loved the opportunity to see, first-hand, how different the realities of these places are, with different cultures, economic powers and resource availability, and how these factors impact the business first-hand.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work for Bain?

Prepare. Make sure you understand what it is about Bain’s culture and goals that make you a great fit. And practice and be ready to show, in your interviews, how you’ll be a great fit and contribute to Bain and its clients.

What do you want your career to look like in 10 years?

I hope to have found the industry or business I am passionate about, and have developed myself enough that I can be a valuable contributor to that industry, maybe as a Bain partner or as an executive at an influential organization.

My greatest personal or professional accomplishment is…the impact I made and the relationships I created with the people from the teams I’ve led over the years. Having people tell me I helped change their careers for the better is a unique feeling.

A fun fact about me people would be surprised to know is…I am very passionate about e-sports. I’m hopeful I’ll get the chance to work and impact this industry while at Bain.
