Emory University’s Goizueta Business School has named accounting professor Karen Sedatole interim dean of the school starting May 30. Sedatole replaces Erika James who announced in February she would be leaving Emory to become dean of The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania later this summer.

“Karen Sedatole is committed to Goizueta’s core value of principled leadership that serves as the foundation for preparing students to pursue careers in business,” says Jan Love, interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, in an announcement from the school.

“The Goizueta community will benefit from Karen’s understanding and support of the school’s approach to providing academic expertise and research in business partnerships that benefits society.”

GOIZUETA’S NEW INTERIM DEAN HAS THOUSANDS OF GOOGLE SCHOLAR CITATIONS

Sedatole joined Emory Goizueta’s faculty in 2017 after 11 years at Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business where she was the Russell E. Palmer Endowed Professor of Accounting. Prior to that, she held positions on the faculties at the University of Texas-Austin and Wake Forest University.

Sedatole earned her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University in 1987, her MBA from the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business in 1989, and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business in 2000.

A prolific researcher, Sedatole has thousands of Google Scholar citations and dozens of media appearances credited to her research.

SEDATOLE LIKELY TO REMAIN INTERIM DEAN FOR THE NEXT 18 MONTHS OR MORE

“I am honored by the trust Provost Love has placed in me with this appointment,” Sedatole says in the school’s announcement. “I am excited about the learning opportunities on the horizon as we leverage the collective knowledge of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni to continue the forward trajectory of Goizueta Business School, even during these unprecedented circumstances.

“I am deeply committed to advancing the school’s strategic plan as well as ensuring we are well positioned for the new normal of delivering business education.”

According to a spokesperson from the school, Goizueta’s dean search is still “very much in its infancy,” and Sedatole will likely be interim dean for at least the next 18 months.
