Online Class Experience

As mentioned previously, I would touch on my Kelley Direct Online class experience and how that is working with my jam-packed schedule (as anyone has!). In the past 6 months, I’ve managed to travel internationally 2x, domestically 2x, and attended several weddings including my own!

Anyway, the online class experience has been one of the best! And something to know about it is that there are asynchronous sessions and synchronous sessions. Synchronous meaning classes occur in real-time and Asynchronous classes are usually recorded and accessible to the student anytime. Professors will give you a schedule in advance for what these look like. Being in the Seattle area does mean my “latest” available live classes are usually at 6 pm Pacific time, while that is 9 pm Eastern time in Indiana. I find this works well since I normally get off work around 5:30 pm. Classes meet once a week so if you’re taking 2 classes, that’s 2x a week – there are times though where I have attended earlier sessions of the same class if I have evening plans. Something that worked well for me in balancing out my schedule is marking which days are “homework” days and which days are to “relax/recover”. If I have a loaded weekend, I try (my best) to knock out projects in advance or I let my group project team members know of my schedule so there are no surprises and we balance out the workload.

Something that is also great about Kelley’s Online Class Experience is that there are disability support services. I am hard of hearing and wear hearing aids in both ears. Classes do have live captions that one can request during those sessions and most recorded material has captions. This is a huge win for me because communication is everything when it comes to learning and engaging with other classmates. Kelley also has disability support and accommodations that can be requested for live events which is something I’ll be looking into for my Kelley on Location event in September!

To share a bit about faculty, each professor I have had has a unique teaching style, but all are extremely dedicated to your success whether it’s for the class or if you want to have a discussion about something work-related. All professors I’ve had were also willing to investigate or troubleshoot any technical issues that can happen with the tool sets we use (no tech is perfect!). I’ve yet to find a professor whose class I didn’t enjoy and my recommendation for anyone researching faculty is to check out their Kelley profiles and/or ask other Kelley alumni or cohorts about their classes.
