Romell Lewis II University of Chicago, Booth School of Business “Motivated, ambitious, resilient, and conscientious person dedicated to the betterment of people and the next generation.” Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio Fun Fact About Yourself: I watch the entire Harry Potter series every year around the holidays because I consider it a Christmas movie Undergraduate School and Major: The Ohio State University (BS Biochemistry), Howard University College of Medicine (MD) Most Recent Employer and Job Title: University of Chicago Medical Center, General Surgery Resident Physician Aside from your classmates and location, what was the key part of Chicago Booth’s MBA programming that led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? Booth offers a healthcare concentration dedicated to creating leaders in the healthcare field. Furthermore, the resources offered will give me the opportunity to learn how to become a transformative leader in healthcare as both a physician and future administrator. The Booth MBA is also known for being highly data-driven. Why does the program’s focus on quantitative analysis and decision-making appeal to you? How have you been able to leverage this approach in your career so far? As a surgeon in training, everything I have done up to this point in my career has been data-driven. We follow algorithms and guidelines backed by studies as closely as possible, but we also have to be ready to pivot in a second when things get off course. This ability has always been appealing to me and I think I can use it to advance the medical field from both a clinical and administrative standpoint for the betterment of my patients and the hospital. What course, club or activity excites you the most at Chicago Booth? I am excited to join the Booth Golf Club. I have recently picked it up as a hobby for the first time and am obsessed with learning and connecting with people over this shared interest. What has been your first impression of the Booth MBA students and alumni you’ve met so far. Tell us your best Booth story so far. They really care and are dedicated to giving back to Booth. My alumni interview was so genuine and felt more like a conversation than an interview. I could tell that the alumna I spoke with had a love for the program and really enjoyed her time here. She spoke to the comradery of Booth students/alumni and the time spent outside the institution contributing to an overall amazing environment to learn and grow with each other. What makes Chicago such a great place to earn an MBA? I am a Midwesterner down to my bones, and I’ve had the opportunity to live in a few other cities. Chicago has been my favorite. Chicago has some of the friendliest people and offers endless opportunities to explore and develop as a person. There is nothing that cannot be found in Chicago whether it be culture, food, sports, hobbies, opportunities or any interests you may be considering. Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: Three years into medicine and my biggest accomplishment to date is that I have made an impact on so many patients. When you start out as a resident, no one knows who you are and you aren’t sure what kind of difference you are making. Years later, I have had the opportunity to see patients again who remember and thank me. I hear from attendings some of the differences I have made in their patients and that is what helps me continue forward with the path I am walking. Describe the best memory of your life. Why does that moment resonate with you? My best memory in life thus far is my graduation from medical school. Academically, it was my greatest academic achievement and the culmination of years of hard work. Not only that, it was a time when much of my family and the people closest to me gathered around to celebrate. It reminded me of all the support that I have been blessed with and the support that I continue to receive. I felt that accomplishment was one that I got to share with those who have invested time, money, and love into me. What advice would you give to help potential applicants gain admission into Chicago Booth’s MBA program? Be yourself. Throughout my interactions with Booth faculty, students, and alumni thus far, there is a true authenticity I feel within the people in the program.
