Stanford MBA power couple: Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, who met while studying at the Stanford Graduate School of Business

A Look Back At Stanford GSB’s Graduation

Stanford GSB: “As the late-afternoon sun shone on Frost Amphitheater on June 14, the commencement ceremony for Stanford Graduate School of  Business featured an address by Akshata Murtyopen in new window, MBA ’06, investor and philanthropist, and Rishi Sunakopen in new window, MBA ’06, Member of Parliament and former prime minister of the United Kingdom.

“Stanford was transformational for us,” Murty said. “It opened our eyes to a whole new way of thinking which has informed everything we’ve done since.” Murty and Sunak met at Stanford as MBA students and married in 2009. Reflecting on their life together, the couple shared three lessons with the graduating class, centered around data, dreams, and dharma.

“The first lesson is what I have learned from Akshata about the false comfort of data alone,” said Sunak. Though he called himself “a numbers guy,” Sunak described the importance of bringing intuition to the decision-making process.

“As you progress in your careers, learn to listen to your intuition with as much rigor and respect as you do the analysis, because if you want to lead, it’s not a question of data or intuition; you’ve got to get comfortable with both,” he advised graduates.”

Stanford MBAs meeting after class

Stanford MBAs Honor Outstanding Faculty Members

Stanford GSB: “Lattes have gone iced, shorts abound, and graduation approaches: It’s nearly summer in Palo Alto. “This is award season at the GSB,” said Stanford Graduate School of Business Interim Dean Peter DeMarzo.

At three memorable ceremonies, students and alumni gathered to honor GSB faculty members in the MBA, MSx, and PhD programs whose impact transcends the classroom.

After reviewing nearly a hundred student nominations for forty different instructors, the MBA Academic Committee presented Distinguished Teaching Awards to two faculty members: Daniela Saban, an associate professor of operations, information, and technology, and Mike Harmon, a lecturer in management.

“We gather today to celebrate something extraordinary — the art of teaching,” said Claire Benninger, MBA ’26. “In a world fixated on what can be measured and quantified, we sometimes overlook the immeasurable impact of a great teacher.”
