'STEMB' Is The New Strategy: Why Tech-Linked MBAs Are Shaping The Future Of Business

MIT Sloan School of Management

Established: 1914 (Sloan School of Management), 1861 (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, US

Graduate Courses In: The Analytics Edge, AI For Impact: Solving Societal-Scale Problems, Communicating with Data

Starting out as an engineering administration course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT Sloan has evolved into one of the world’s most prestigious business schools with an integrated STEM focus.

Its MBA program ranks in the top 10 globally according to both QS and the Financial Times, and a 2023 QS breakdown of the best MBAs by career specialization placed Sloan top for Information Management and second for Technology.

The School offers several major STEM-designated degrees outside of the MBA for postgrads, including Master of Finance, Master of Business Analytics, and MSc in Management Studies.

Beyond just reinforcing core management training with technical content such as AI integration across the curriculum, a key advantage of the STEM certification is that it allows international students to extend their stay in the US for optional practical training (OPT) after graduating.

Both inside and outside the classroom, students are encouraged to consider how technology can be implemented practically to solve complex challenges, highlighted by the diversity of ventures coming out of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship’s delta v Educational Accelerator.

The accelerator provides a capstone educational opportunity for MIT student entrepreneurs, offering access to a dedicated co-working space where teams can work on developing their ventures from June to early September each year. Companies showcased in MIT’s 2025 delta v Demo Day presented technology solutions across athletics, construction, healthcare, and more.

“Sloan creates a low-stakes environment that enables high-potential exploration and partnerships,” says Fatima Arabzada. “Carpe Diem is in full swing here; any day can start unassuming and end with an epiphany, a life-long friendship, a partnership, or a change in career trajectory through interactions at a campus event, the Sailing Pavilion, or classrooms.”
