Europe & China Dominate Business School Rankings From ShanghaiRanking

CHICAGO SETS THE BAR IN FINANCE

The Finance ranking reflected a more conventional take. The University of Chicago led the field, followed by Harvard, Columbia, New York University, and Penn. This aligned with U.S. News’ Specialization Ranking, which surveyed business school deans and MBA directors on the academic quality of various MBA programs in 2025. Here, Chicago Booth ranked 2nd for Finance, with Penn/Wharton (1st), New York University (3rd), Columbia (4th), and Harvard (7th) all cracking the Top 10.

That doesn’t mean there weren’t some surprises in Finance. The University of Florida and Washington University achieved the highest scores in the World-Class Faculty dimension. The High-Quality Research honors went to two Chinese business programs: Southwestern University of Finance and Economics and Renmin University. Yale University outpointed both the University of Chicago and Harvard University in the Research Impact dimension. When it comes to International Collaboration, it was truly a non-American affair, led by the London Business School, Copenhagen Business School, and the University of Toronto. Still, the University of Chicago dominated in World-Class Output, besting running up Columbia by a definitive 24.8-point margin.

Unlike Business Administration, Finance was truly an American affair, with American business school claiming the Top 7 highest scores – and placing 15 schools in the Top 25. Copenhagen Business School and Monash University, which ranked 1st and 3rd in Business Administration, tumbled to 19th and 24th in Finance respectively.

WANT TO LEARN MANAGEMENT? HEAD TO ASIA

In terms of conventional wisdom, Management was a mixed bag. MIT and Harvard – popularly known as “The West Point of Capitalism” – placed 2nd and 4th respectively. Overall, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University claimed top prize. In major surprises, Texas A&M ranked 3rd, with the Top 5 rounded out by Tsingua University. Such numbers contradict the U.S. News Specialization Ranking, where the University of Michigan, Penn/Wharton, Stanford GSB, and Northwestern Kellogg followed #1 Harvard (in that order).

When it comes to World-Class Faculty, Copenhagen Business School collected the highest score, with Ohio State making an unexpected appearance in 3rd. For World-Class Output, the University of Pennsylvania, better known as the Wharton School, achieved a perfect score. High-Quality Research, however, was a purely Asian dimension. Led by Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the next-highest scores originated from the National University of Singapore, Tsingua University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Hong Kong Polytechnic University also edged out the National University of Singapore in the Research Impact dimension. However, the margin was slimmer in International Collaboration, with just 0.1 of a point separating INSEAD from the National University of Singapore.

Overall, Management was again an American strength, as 16 of the 25 highest-ranked programs in the field are based in the United States.
