Leading Through Change: How NBS Prepares Professionals For An AI-Driven WorldPartner Content by: Nanyang Business School on August 03, 2026 | 7 minute read August 3, 2026 Copy Link Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email Share on LinkedIn Share on WhatsApp Share on Reddit Today, generative AI (GenAI) tools can produce everything from code to reports, proposals, and presentations within seconds. But speed alone doesn’t translate to value. How useful and accurate is the output? Does it contain risks or blind spots, and how well does it address real business needs? These remain questions that only human judgment can answer. “In an AI-driven world, the need for real-world experience is imperative,” says Professor Goh Kim Huat, Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) at Nanyang Business School (NBS). “When we have abundant and often excessive information, the onus is on humans to make sound judgments.” As the workplace evolves at lightning speed, developing the judgment to drive business outcomes can feel confusing and daunting – especially when there are no clear-cut answers. The postgraduate programs at NBS are designed to bridge this gap through future-focused modules spanning AI, data analytics, machine learning, and more. This classroom learning goes hand-in-hand with real-world projects and practical exposure, preparing business professionals to grow into critical thinkers and strategic leaders. WHY HUMAN THINKING REMAINS KEY ACROSS INDUSTRIES Across industries, organisations are racing to harness GenAI’s seemingly endless potential. Yet more professionals are realising that the challenge doesn’t lie in simply using AI, but in balancing its capabilities with human decision-making. “AI can enhance efficiency, but we still need to understand context and make balanced decisions,” points out Jessica Lim, a Nanyang Fellows MBA alumna. Having built a decade-long career in Singapore’s social services sector, she understands the importance of using AI thoughtfully and responsibly when working with sensitive information and vulnerable communities. “Human empathy and trust are central to our work in social services,” she emphasises. “AI can support professionals, but it cannot replace genuine human connection and care.” Nanyang MBA alumnus Sebastian Hanke echoes her perspective. As a Senior Associate in a Big 4 consulting firm, Sebastian’s day-to-day work in business development is very different from Jessica’s. Yet he, too, has seen firsthand the importance of human thinking in shaping business direction. “AI can handle grunt work like analysis and drafting, but the pitfall is getting lost in everything AI unlocks,” he shares. “When AI suddenly changes what’s possible, the question isn’t ‘What can we do with this?’ but rather, ‘Does this actually fit what the business wants to become?’” LEARNING TO LEAD IN AN AI-DRIVEN WORLD At NBS, the postgraduate programs are continually updated to reflect these emerging needs and challenges. By combining cutting-edge modules with global perspectives and strategic insights, the programs equip professionals to harness digital technologies while developing the critical thinking needed to create real business value. Prof Goh teaches Data Analytics for Decision Making – a module that has rapidly evolved alongside advances in AI. While the course previously focused on deploying AI and analytics tools, it now centres on building the judgment to identify what is worth analysing and to transform business needs into viable, meaningful projects. “Students are now taught to design models and encouraged to use GenAI tools, especially for coding,” Prof Goh explains. “At the same time, we guide them to develop and plan analytics proposals that achieve organisational outcomes.” Each program offers rich opportunities for students to apply technical expertise to real-world projects. For example, the MSc in Business Analytics (MSBA) curriculum features an optional data analytics practicum, enabling students to gain hands-on experience with industry challenges. Meanwhile, MBA participants can build strategic skills through Strategy Projects at Nanyang (SPAN) – a live consulting project where they work in teams to solve pressing issues presented by leading companies. Another key segment, Leading People Globally (LPG), helps students develop the perspectives and cultural intelligence to lead diverse teams amidst change. “In an AI-augmented workplace, the role of humans will be setting business direction, driving change, and motivating co-workers,” shares Prof Goh. “Doing a postgraduate degree can provide a much-needed cognitive reset, giving professionals a high-level view of the essential value they contribute to their organizations.” AS AI EVOLVES, HOW CAN HUMANS STAY COMPETITIVE? For MSBA alumna Jacqueline Ong, building strategic capabilities has transformed her career. As a software engineer at a leading aviation technology provider, Jacqueline has seen AI increasingly automate repetitive tasks such as data extraction and processing. But her MSBA experience has expanded her skill set from “pure programming” to “broader strategic thinking” enabling her to stay competitive and add value in her role. “Speed is one area where AI ‘wins’ over humans,” she says. “By delegating some time-consuming tasks to AI, I can focus on analysing business requirements – which are typically data sensitive – and coordinating the project direction with my team.” Jacqueline credits these strategic and leadership capabilities to her MSBA journey. As a computer science major, she wanted to learn how to translate technical solutions into business outcomes. The MSBA’s hands-on approach gave her the foundation to apply analytics in real-world business situations. She also secured a five-month internship as a Data Scientist (GenAI) as part of the MSBA’s data analytics practicum. “Through my classroom projects and internship, I was able to lead exploratory projects that weren’t just ‘cool’ tech, but were operationally viable and had defined business value,” she recalls. “These skills are exactly what I use now in my role. I’ve realised that the most innovative solutions come from blending the two skill sets, and this will help me navigate the complexities of the AI era.” DRIVING INNOVATION AND IMPACT Like Jacqueline, NBS alumnus Louis Chan comes from a strong technical background: pharmaceutical science. His one-year journey in the Nanyang Professional MBA (PMBA) programme has honed his understanding of business strategy at the boardroom level, enabling him to turn scientific theory into sustainability impact more effectively. As a Sustainability Manager at a leading resources company, Louis recognised that the sustainability sector was evolving rapidly. He sought a PMBA programme that would equip him to keep pace with these changes, and NBS’s forward-thinking curriculum met his needs. “One thing I appreciated most about the PMBA is that it doesn’t treat AI as separate from the curriculum. Instead, AI is woven into how we learn to think and work,” he reflects. “Many of the modules are structured in a way that encourages us to use AI tools – but also, to critically question the AI’s output and ask whether it makes strategic sense.” This ability to harness AI critically has proven increasingly valuable in Louis’ career. While AI enables him to work more efficiently, it also comes with risks such as hallucination and bias. Such risks have particularly high stakes in sustainability, where regulatory accuracy and stakeholder trust are paramount. Through his PMBA training, Louis has not only sharpened his ability to critically assess AI-generated insights – he can also turn them into a compelling business case for sustainability initiatives. “When I’m developing a strategy or preparing to advocate for a particular course of action, I will deliberately ask the AI to argue against me,” he shares. “I ask it to find weaknesses in my reasoning, flag assumptions I might be making, and construct the strongest possible counterarguments. This process consistently surfaces blind spots I could not have caught on my own, and it has made my proposals significantly stronger before they reach decision-makers.” For professionals like Jacqueline and Louis, a postgraduate degree has unlocked the perspectives and practical experience to navigate change with confidence. “Thanks to my journey at NBS, I’m not just keeping up with these changes,” sums up Louis. “I feel equipped to lead through them.” ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE AI ERA?
