Community Work and Leadership Roles in Business School: President, Desautels Graduate Health and Wellness Committee, 2024 McCall MacBain Scholar

Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school? I would have to be most proud of working as a case competition participant with my fellow McGill MBA’s Bintou, Pedro, Matt and Udit. Together, we grew as a team and participated in several different competitions across Canada throughout my time and McGill.

What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career? So far in my professional career, I would have to say I am most proud of my work on the Blackwater Gold Mine project in British Columbia as part of my time with Bird Construction. The collaboration and resilience we exemplified from start to finish was truly a proud moment in my career, and the site leaders who promoted that methodology, including David, Scott, Lucas and Tyler, taught me a decade worth of positive leadership skills in a year.

Why did you choose this business school? Having spent my whole life in Northern British Columbia, both professionally and as a student, I aspired to attend Desautels to grow my business background through the lens of Canada’s east coast. In addition, Montreal provided some very unique networking and internship opportunities in industries that are much smaller or completely unavailable on Canada’s west coast, and I was lucky enough to experience this through an internship with Bombardier Aerospace.

Who was your favorite MBA professor? My favorite professor at Desautels has got to be Professor Sujata Madan. Sujata always brightened our day during our finance courses and later took me under her wing to supervise my independent study on virtual economies as speculative investment vehicles – allowing me to explore a non-traditional topic outside of the classroom and sharing in my enthusiasm. Thank you for everything, Sujata!

What was your favorite course as an MBA? While I enjoyed many of my courses at McGill, Professor Anna Kim’s Strategies for Sustainable Development course has really stuck with me. The class featured sustainability topics through case studies from across the globe, and I particularly enjoyed her integration of Indigenous approaches to sustainability as part of the course material. I also really appreciated Anna’s approach to promoting a discussion focused class and enjoyed the insights of her TA Sonali. I highly recommend Strategies for Sustainable Development to future McGill MBAs and thank you to Anna for the wonderful course.

What was your favorite MBA event or tradition at your business school? Easily my favorite MBA tradition was the McGill MBA International Study Trip our class took last year. Exploring the business world of Dubai and Istanbul with my cohort was a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I made some incredible memories, even getting to present a case study project at the Dubai AI Festival.

Looking back over your MBA experience, what is the one thing you’d do differently and why? If there was one thing I could have done differently, I would have certainly put myself out there earlier on into the program! During your MBA, there are so many opportunities especially early on to connect with classmates, employers, and collaborators. Take as many opportunities as you can to reach out and tell your story, as you never know where that connection may lead too or people you may build relationships with.

What did you love most about your business school’s town? It is the fact that there is always something to do in Montreal, and so much to see, regardless of the time of year. I really enjoyed the spring and summer months and look forward to the summer visits to Jean-Talon market!

What business leader do you admire most? One of the business leaders that I admire the most would have to be James Sinegal, co-founder and former CEO of Costco. In a business of tight margins, James strived to build a business that revolved around valuing his employees, customers, and vendors. Many CEOs today, and young MBAs entering managerial positions, could take a page out of James Sinegal’s book on how to treat the people that make your business possible.

What is one way that your business school has integrated AI into your programming? What insights did you gain from using AI? Desautels has offered MBAs some AI learning classes, including one in which I am enrolled in around AI governance and managing AI. It has been a really great experience so far, and I have spent a lot of time learning about how we can responsibly integrate AI into professional business operations and make better managerial decisions by leveraging AI.

Which MBA classmate do you most admire? Of all my incredible MBA peers at McGill, the one I admire the most is Pedro Guaraldi. Pedro and I met early in the program and became fast friends over our shared interest in case competitions. Through many long days of working on slide decks and storytelling, I came to admire Pedro as an incredibly hard worker who is highly disciplined, and easily one of the greatest team players that I know. I am proud to call him a close friend, and I aspire to emulate his level of integrity throughout my post-MBA career.

What are the top two items on your professional bucket list? The first item on my professional bucket list is that I want to pursue opportunities to leverage my MBA education and experience to give back to my community in a volunteer role, perhaps on a board of directors or as an advisor, particularly in organizations promoting financial literacy and poverty reduction, or children’s health. The second item on my bucket list would have to be working to start my own venture.

What made Brandon such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2026?

“Brandon’s consistently positive attitude, personable nature, and great sense of humour made him a genuinely uplifting presence in the MBA program. He excelled as a collaborator, working effectively with peers across projects and competitions—including contributing to his team’s Desautels Cup win. Brandon’s commitment to improvement was evident in his coachability and strong work ethic, qualities that helped him secure a solid internship at Bombardier and earn recognition as a McCall MacBain Scholar. Brandon’s professionalism, drive, and team-oriented mindset elevated the learning environment for everyone around him. He was an exceptional addition to the Class of 2026.”
