Inside ESMT’s Global Online MBA: Growth With No Career Pause

Traditionally, pursuing an MBA has meant stepping away from your career for an intensive, in-person experience. For many professionals, that path continues to be a valuable option with a strong ROI. But for those who don’t want to pause their careers or relocate their lives, there is a compelling, flexible alternative—an online MBA.

ESMT Berlin’s Global Online MBA leans into this flexibility without compromising on quality. With a practical curriculum that can be applied at work immediately, adjustable study options, and meaningful opportunities to connect to global peers both online and on campus, it brings together the benefits of a more traditional MBA experience in a format that suits busy lives.

INSIDE THE ESMT GLOBAL ONLINE MBA

Recently, two ESMT Global Online MBA alumni and one current student shared their experiences of the program. They explained the curriculum’s career benefits, the program format that allowed them to balance professional demands with MBA studies, and how it is possible to build a strong network with peers you (mostly) only meet online.

A TRULY GLOBAL ONLINE MBA

The three participants—Cătălina Costache from Romania, Executive Director of Polisano Foundation in Romania; Joan Mwaniki, Senior SAP Integration Consultant at BMW IT Hub in South Africa; and Douglas Souza, CEO of CNEX in Brazil—embody one of the most interesting things about ESMT’s online MBA: it truly is a global program.

In fact, in 2026, people from 60 different nationalities enrolled in the Global Online MBA. This illustrates a key benefit: because online participants are not bound by relocation logistics, nor by strict laws regarding student visas, the barriers to international participation are easier to overcome. Joining the program means joining a network of global peers with varied thoughts and experiences; a fantastic foundation for succeeding in increasingly international workplaces.

Cătălina, Class of 2025

As Cătălina, Class of 2025, put it:

“My cohort was wonderfully diverse—colleagues joining from Africa who sometimes lost connection due to power outages, others logging in from airports between flights for multinationals, some adjusting to call times that fell at unusual hours. That diversity taught me a great deal about multiculturalism in practice.”

– Cătălina Costache, Executive Director, Polisano Foundation. Global Online MBA Class of 2025

FLEXIBILITY ON YOUR SCHEDULE

Another advantage of ESMT’s Global Online MBA program is its inherent flexibility. As with any MBA, there will be a need to work hard, yet the pace is designed to complement a demanding job, not conflict with it.

To this end, the program is made up of a mixture of live lectures and self-guided learning, so participants can work around their other responsibilities. Additionally, each live lecture is held twice, so participants can join from any time zone. And, while the program is designed to be completed in two years, participants can take up to five—pausing if needed as work or life demands.

Douglas Souza, Class of 2023

For Douglas Souza, Class of 2023, the flexibility of the program (along with a healthy dose of self-discipline) meant that he was able to accept a CEO role while still completing the MBA in two years:

“Balancing the MBA with a demanding executive agenda was not easy, but it was absolutely possible. The key was personal organization and discipline.

Once you establish a routine and create the right structure around your time, it becomes viable to manage both…The program was designed in a way that allowed me to continue working at a senior level while also dedicating real time and attention to my studies.”

– Douglas Souza, CEO, CNEX. Global Online MBA Class of 2023.

LEARNING THAT CAN BE APPLIED IN REAL TIME

ESMT’s Global Online MBA is ideal for learning that can be done around work. And it is also ideal for learning that can be applied at work, in real time. Unlike a more traditional MBA that requires a career break, there is no standdown period with an online MBA. Change happens live, with an immediate effect on how you show up professionally.

Joan Mwaniki, Class of 2027

For many of ESMT’s online MBA students, this means working towards career transition and growth while still studying. This is the case for current student Joan Mwaniki, Class of 2027:

“The transition I am making is from technical specialist towards a broader leadership role. I want to keep my technical depth while becoming stronger in strategy, commercial thinking, and organizational leadership.

The MBA is helping me understand the business context around technical decisions and explain their value in terms that other leaders can act on. My aim is not to leave technology, but to lead it with a fuller understanding of the business it serves…I often learn something in a module and apply it at work, days later.”

– Joan Mwaniki, Senior SAP Integration Consultant, BMW IT Hub. Global Online MBA Class of 2027

ONLINE NETWORKING—AND THE REAL CAMPUS EXPERIENCE

For many, one of the concerns about a distance-learning MBA is what the networking will be like. Is it still possible to form strong bonds with your classmates when you primarily see each other through a screen?

ESMT’s Global Online MBA is formatted to directly address these concerns. Online lectures are supplemented with small-group projects, discussion forums, and breakout rooms to create regular opportunities to exchange ideas with peers from different industries, functions, and countries. Many cohorts also create group message chats for the class where they can continue bonding in a more informal environment.

esmtAnd then there is Berlin Experience Week. Held on the ESMT campus in the heart of Berlin, this elective invites participants to the school to experience ESMT—and Berlin—in person. After months of studying together online, this week allows students to cement peer friendships with shared classes, dinners, and other social activities. It also helps them meet the ESMT community from outside the program: something that can traditionally be more difficult with an online MBA.

By combining online engagement with time on campus together during Berlin Experience Week, Global Online MBA participants can build a global network that supports them throughout the program—and well after graduation.

The program included a Berlin Experience Week, when many of us came together on campus. That experience was spectacular.

Later, we also met again during graduation, which was a very special moment of celebration with the cohort. The online networking also worked well. Our group is still connected today, and people continue trying to meet in different parts of the world. That ongoing connection is one of the valuable outcomes of the program.

 – Douglas Souza

Meeting my cohort in person was one of the most meaningful parts of the week. Some are early in their careers, some are aiming for executive roles, and others are navigating new industries or countries. Hearing their stories made me appreciate the strength of the group around me.

– Joan Mwaniki

We met in person at the Berlin Experience Week, at an elective I chose in Berlin, and of course at graduation. Some of those connections have continued well beyond the program – and I smile every time I see that the WhatsApp groups we created for our study groups are still active, with messages still coming in long after we graduated.

 – Cătălina Costache

esmtFor those looking to grow their leadership skills, broaden their global perspective, and earn a respected degree without hitting pause on their career, the ESMT Global Online MBA is a strong choice—for now, and for future development.
