Hi Mr. Tech Finance Guy, This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I’m impressed by your robust work experience and differentiated community leadership activities. Your GMAT score does offset your undergrad GPA somewhat, and be sure to share the circumstances that affected your undergrad GPA in the optional essay. It’s encouraging that you were able to do well in your senior year, taking business classes. This, combined with your GMAT score and strong Masters GPA should hopefully alleviate any concerns the Admissions Committee have around your academic capability. Separately, do consider sharing in your application your motivation for the community work that you do. I see the personal connection with your mental health activities. What about for the other activities (eg. low income students, women in tech)? Is there a personal connection there too? If you can tell your stories compellingly and differentiate yourself from the crowd, I do think you have a solid shot for a school like Wharton where the average acceptance rate ranges between 16-19%. Best wishes for your MBA journey!
Mr. Tech Finacne Guy- you have an impressive history of extracurricular work that will appeal to your schools. Your stellar GMAT score is well above Wharton’s average and median scores ,but your GPA is well below the 3.6 average and you will be on the lower end of work experience. A strong GMAT can somewhat offset a lower GPA but it can’t entirely mitigate it. I see you have a masters degree as well. You didn’t list your GPA there and while those grades don’t count in schools’ data for ranking purposes, a solid GPA there will help give the adcomms confidence that you can do the work in an MBA program. Additionally, I would like to know more about your professional side, what big wins have you had there? It looks like you had a very short stint out of school ad have now been in your role 2+ years. Any growth there in terms of title or responsibility? These are things you will want to focus on when crafting your narrative. Think about the Why MBA question- what are the skills you need to gain to achieve your goal of MBB consulting? Good luck.
