When it comes to Latin American business schools, Mexico’s triple-accredited EGADE, the postgraduate business school of Tecnológico de Monterrey, is always one of the first to be mentioned. Indeed, it is one of the few to appear on the big, well-respected ranking lists and is usually ranked as Latin America’s top school.

EGADE’s flagship program is its 12-month, full-time MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which takes place in Mexico City. This aims to produce “visionary leaders” who can “challenge and transform their industries through powerful ideas” and is designed to foster what the school calls “high-impact venture creation and corporate intrapreneurship,” and to teach  “survival skills” for modern business — skills such as “critical and integrative thinking and problem-solving,” perseverance, curiosity, and imagination, as well as instilling the values of equality, diversity, and environmental consciousness.

It is an intimate program, with just over 20 participants in an average year, mostly from Mexico — just 20% of each cohort is international. However, EGADE is one of the few schools that comes close to having a 50-50 gender split.

As a member of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM), which consists of over 30 business schools from around the world, EGADE offers students the ability to spend time in partner schools to increase their international exposure. The innovation theme lends itself to overseas trips, and students can take residencies to experience and study the startup scenes in tech hot-spots such as Silicon Valley and Israel. Closer to home, students also get to spend time in Mexico’s very own tech hub in Guadalajara.

MBA candidates participate in the Innovation Lab, spending time in businesses working on real-world problems, where they are promised face time with executives. The focus on innovation also extends to an “entrepreneurial ecosystem,” involving conferences, workshops, and networking, as well as programs, venture pitch sessions, and an innovation challenge.

The program is pretty intense. It covers all the topics you would expect to see on a cutting-edge MBA, including three courses on business analytics. EGADE has also embraced blended learning, offering short online courses to supplement face-to-face classroom and group work.

Participants don’t have the luxury of electives, although given that they are probably focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, they should be happy with the large number of courses that dive into topics related to their core interest. For example, there are three courses on venture creation, and another, in the first term, on building entrepreneurial teams, values, and culture.

For those who are not so focused on startups and innovation, EGADE offers a wide range of other MBA options:

  • A 30-month, part-time dual-degree MBA in Global Business and Strategy with the Belk College of Business at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
  • An online MBA that can be taken full-time in 15 months, or part-time in 24 months.
  • A 15-month, part-time dual degree Executive MBA with W.P. Carey Business School.
  • A 21-month Executive MBA taught by five schools in Mexico, the Netherlands, the United States, Brazil, and China.
