The Chaifetz School of Business at Saint Louis University teaches business through hands-on courses that not only give students technical skills, but ethical leadership skills to use business as a driving force for good.

Saint Louis University is the oldest university west of the Mississippi – founded in 1818 and known for being a prestigious Catholic school with a Jesuit tradition.

Saint Louis was named after King Louis IX, is home to the Gateway arch, and was host of the 1904 World’s Fair which was held at Forest Park – a ten-minute drive from the university campus, where new ideas including products and scientific advances from all over the world were showcased. Fax machines and ice cream cones made their debut, and Thomas Edison was even on site to oversee the use of electricity. Today, the 1,300-acre park remains one of St. Louis’ premiere attractions.

The program welcomed a cohort of 27 students this year, with an average of 2.3 years of working experience and an average age of 25 years old.

The one-year Chaifetz MBA is delivered in-person and can be completed in as little as 11 months. The MBA has a cohort-based program that begins each summer and spans three terms — summer, fall and spring. The curriculum at Chaifetz allows MBAs to develop an understanding of theory and apply concepts through simulations as well as in-person consulting experiences with local St. Louis companies and nonprofits. Chaifetz won’t ask MBAs to embrace ideas as much as they’ll encourage them to challenge them and to develop their own answers.

The B-School recognizes that effective leadership in today’s global economy requires perspective – so they build in a seven-day international immersion trip where MBAs conduct a global brand audit, learn from local companies, and network with executives – all included in tuition.

The university also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, which U.S. -based students often visit through immersions and study abroad programs.

“In 1910, the School of Commerce and Finance was founded at Saint Louis University. It was one of the first business schools west of the Mississippi River and marked a commitment from this historic institution to lead the nation in educating its future business leaders. Over the next 100-plus years, the school built a legacy of exceptional faculty, world-class education and a spirit of possibility. Now, as the newest dean of the Chaifetz School of Business, it is my great privilege to build on that legacy for a new generation,” says Dr. Barnali Gupta, Dean of the Chaifetz School of Business in the school’s 2021 Dean’s Report.

Ranking Analysis:

In Poets&Quants‘ 2013 ranking, St. Louis came in at No. 93, largely because U.S. News gave it a ranking of 84 that year (the other publications didn’t rank it). This year, though, U.S. News didn’t rank St. Louis at all; for that reason, the school is likely to fall off of our next ranking.
