Credentials: Dr. Urban is the chain of Penn’s department of anthropology, where he has taught for over two decades. He is also an instructor in Wharton’s executive development program. An expert in areas like cultural and linguistic anthropology and corporate ethnography, he is the author of seven books, with his research recent examining cultural flow in organizations and for-profit corporate structures. A renowned teacher, Urban earned both the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Ira H. Abrams Memorial Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2011.

Graded: Students must complete all required assignments to finish the course.

Description: Culture means different things to different people. In business, culture encompasses a wide array of variables. You could argue that culture is the sum of the values that unite an organization. Then again, the practices and behaviors, which sometimes run contrary to an organization’s value, are what truly define culture. It can also be expressed through its structure, along with its style of communication and decision-making. Of course, culture can be boiled down to an organization’s mission and aspiration, along with the stories, rituals, and taboos embedded in its DNA. This course evaluates culture from each of these standpoints, so students can gain greater awareness of what constitutes the culture around them. Armed with this awareness, students will be able to better fit in with their peers, personify the values driving the operations, and emerge as effective leaders.
