Description: This course emphasizes the money view of the global financial marketplace, straying from traditional economic theory to show how money markets truly work. In particular, the course will examine the global nature of modern financial markets and the changing role of banking in the aftermath of the financial meltdown. The course is based on Mehrlingā€™s videotaped lectures at Barnard, along with embedded quizzes and slide videos.

Review: ā€œI was impressed by the quality of this course. I liked Professor Mehrling so much that I am trying to find another course with a professor like him. We were spoiled ā€¦hard to find another one that speaks so well is so clear and is so enthusiastic about his teaching. I learned a LOT and now I can read financial news and although I do not understand everything I know what they are talking about. I recommend this course and this professor. Whatever course he gives in the future I will definitely follow. Thank you very much.ā€ For additional reviews, click here.

Additional Note: At Barnard, Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics are prerequisites for this course, though they are not required here. To examine the course concepts in greater depth, Mehrling suggests students purchase his book, The New Lombard Street, How the Fed Became the Dealer of Last Resort. The second half of this course, which covers the foreign exchange and capital markets, will begin in October.
