Ask me about all the behind-the-scenes stories of India’s 1983 World Cup triumph! Undergraduate School and Major: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), Civil Engineering Most Recent Employer and Job Title: Omnivore, Investment Principal What makes London such a great place to earn an MBA degree? London is the epicenter for everything under the sun! Having also been to Dubai, Singapore, Paris, and New York City, the sheer depth and breadth of things that London offers across all aspects (tech, business, finance, culture, food, diversity, history, and so on) is unparalleled. While most people tend to focus about the career outcomes from an MBA program, I strongly believe that an MBA program is also an avenue to rediscover yourself, find new hobbies, and grow personally. London is hands down the best city to do this. Lastly, and probably a controversial opinion, I actually like London’s weather – cooler summers, milder winters, and low humidity. London offers much better weather than most other top business school locations – I dare you to challenge me! Aside from your classmates and location, what was the key part of London Business School’s MBA curriculum and programming that led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? Firstly, flexibility in the curriculum is unique to London Business School, and this was an important reason for me to choose London Business School. The flexible exit timelines and the elective structure means that each student can design an MBA program that’s unique to them, giving me the comfort that I can embrace my individuality. I wish to fully utilize the flexibility to explore multiple internships, learn a new language, pick up a new sport, and potentially complete the program faster if there is an exciting opportunity waiting for me. Second, my wife, Kavya, was also accepted into the MBA program at London Business School, and we can’t wait to start this journey together! Third, I was generously offered the BK Birla Scholarship by the School and I look forward to honouring the ideals that BK Birla held dear. London Business School is one of the most culturally and professionally diverse MBA programs in the world. What will make you unique in this class and how will it enrich the experience of your classmates? Having shifted from being a consultant, to a startup founder, to a Venture Capitalist investor, I have made multiple career pivots and understand what it takes to break into new industries and functions with no or minimal prior experience. Since many of my classmates would want to shift their industry or function via the MBA program, I intend to support them in their journey. I have also worked across India, Southeast Asia, and Africa and can bring unique perspectives on technology and businesses across these regions. Last, I am an avid board game enthusiast, and I intend to regularly host game nights along with my wife. We both love to host people, and we believe game nights are a great way to decompress from the rigorous MBA program and build deeper connections with our peers beyond the classroom. What course, club or activity excites you the most at London Business School? Over the next five years, I believe India is going to experience a huge influx of first-generation business owners not being able to find succession talent. I want to unlock the potential of Indian small businesses through the Search Fund model. Thus, the “Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA)” Club excites me the most. Having spoken with people at the club, I understand that the Search Funds ecosystem in the UK is maturing and there’s immense scope for AI to disrupt cost structures and drive scale for small businesses. Through the club and its activities, I intend to understand the playbook for acquisition and scaling, incentive structures for the management, avenues for value creation, and exit pathways. Professionally, I intend to participate in the Private Equity & Venture Capital club to further my career in private investing and bring my experience across early-stage startups and early/growth stage investing to the broader community. I am also very excited about LBS’s Global Experiences courses, especially those in geographies like Brazil and South Africa, to learn how businesses operate, how the local culture influences business decisions, and how technology is being adopted across various walks of life. Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: My greatest professional achievement has been championing an investment from Omnivore into a sustainable chemicals company, despite strong opposition from the leadership. When I presented the deal to the investment committee, there were several concerns raised, but based on my research, I was extremely convinced of the opportunity. Without getting disheartened, I spent more time with the team, undertook some field visits and expert calls, and presented the deal to the leadership again and fought hard to convince them. Eventually, they agreed, and the initial small exposure was substantially increased after early signs of good performance. The investment has now generated ~8x returns for the fund and taught me the importance of not taking no for an answer and investing with conviction. Tell us your favorite memory: My favorite memory will always be visiting my grandparents’ place in the Indian countryside for my summer vacations. I can still vividly recollect climbing the mango trees, strolling across endless stretches of rice plantations, playing with the farm animals, and making delicious pickles and snacks from freshly sourced produce. This childhood experience has shaped my deep-rooted love for plants and nurtured my favorite hobby now in urban gardening. What advice would you give to help potential applicants gain admission into London Business School’s MBA program? The MBA application process is as much about you choosing the school as it is about the school choosing you. It’s very easy to get lost during the process and try and fit yourself into a framework to appease the admissions committee or the interviewer, but please step back and think hard about why you really want to join LBS. Find reasons that are unique to you. Speak with as many current students and alumni (I found LBS alumni to be most approachable and responsive) to build a nuanced understanding of the pros and cons of the school, and craft your application around those aspects.
