The harder problem, according to a major new report, is getting faculty ready to teach with it at scale. Inspire Higher Ed, working with AACSB International, the Graduate Management Admission Council, and the Graduate Business Curriculum Roundtable, has released an update to A Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Business Education: Exemplars and Critical Themes for Successful Integration, authored by Inspire Higher Ed founder Tawnya Means. Among the report’s eight organizing themes, one gets singled out as the pivot point: Faculty development is described as the factor that determines whether every other AI investment – a secure platform, a redesigned course, a fleet of AI tutoring agents – actually reaches a classroom or stalls before it gets there. The report points to a wide gap in a College Board survey of more than 3,000 faculty: Among faculty who’d used AI hands-on themselves, 95% said it helps students grasp complex material through personalized explanation. Among faculty without that direct experience, only 60% agreed. The 35-point gap, in the report’s reading, shows that firsthand use – not general awareness or attitude – is what actually convinces faculty of AI’s classroom value. A MUCH LARGER SAMPLE The finding comes from a bigger cohort than the report’s first edition carried five months ago. The community of participating schools has grown from 48 in January 2026 to 84 in the July update – a 75% jump – including 67 U.S. schools and 17 from outside the U.S., more than double January’s international count and now spanning roughly a dozen countries across five continents. The report describes the pool as predominantly AACSB-accredited. New participants this time around include Columbia Business School, Rensselaer’s Lally School, Miami Herbert, Michigan State’s Broad College, University at Buffalo, and the first sub-Saharan African participant, Nigeria’s Docenti Global Business School. Forty-eight schools returned from January, including Stanford Graduate School of Business, MIT Sloan School of Management, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, Northwestern Kellogg School of Management, and NYU Stern School of Business. among those that provided updates – including Berkeley Haas, which delivered its anchor “Business AI Foundations” course and sharpened its governance framing – the report says a consistent pattern emerges: pilots and single courses have become concentrations, certificates, and standing platforms. HOW SCHOOLS ARE CLOSING THE GAP Rather than one-off training sessions, the report’s convergence findings point to peer-driven, discipline-specific development as what’s actually moving faculty from wariness to fluency. At Northeastern’s D’Amore-McKim School, a faculty survey found that colleagues and field-specific examples were more in demand than generic outside training. At Wake Forest, that kind of grassroots, supported experimentation has produced 68% of business faculty using generative AI weekly or daily, a level the report calls a sign faculty have moved from wariness into practice. Arizona State’s W. P. Carey School pairs its AI-Enhanced Teaching Initiative and grant funding with a clear expectation: all faculty must incorporate AI into their teaching starting this fall. The report portrays faculty development as a “chain of ceilings” – where a faculty member’s own comfort level with AI limits their course design, which in turn limits what students can achieve – arguing that schools need to invest in faculty capability and assessment redesign together rather than as separate initiatives. 7 OTHER THEMES Among the other themes of the report: Faculty development sits alongside findings on AI infrastructure moving from basic access to full institutional architecture; the shift of AI literacy from an elective to a graduation requirement at schools like Purdue’s Daniels School; ethics and governance moving from policy documents into graded coursework, as at Suffolk’s Sawyer Business School, where students are scored on catching an AI hiring tool that filtered out nearly all female applicants; and partnerships evolving from vendor licensing to co-development, exemplified by the University of East London’s work with Amazon Web Services. The last three themes address domain-specific AI applications built into individual disciplines, such as Carnegie Mellon Tepper’s 14 custom learning labs simulating real business scenarios in finance, marketing, and operations; the evolution of AI-enhanced pedagogy, as at Ivey Business School, where AI-powered case simulations are redesigned to preserve rather than shortcut the case method’s productive struggle; and leadership’s role in sustaining transformation past any single champion — exemplified by Miami Herbert’s Dean Paul Pavlou, an AI scholar himself, who has made AI a central pillar of the school’s 2025-29 strategic plan. The report also cites external demand data: GMAC’s 2026 Corporate Recruiters Survey of 621 recruiters across 39 countries found AI and data-analysis skills posted the largest year-over-year jump in importance of any skill category, while a separate GMAC survey of more than 4,200 prospective students found half now expect AI embedded in their coursework.
