Stanford GSB Tops New AI Readiness Index; 42% of Business Schools Require No AI Coursework

Stanford Graduate School of Business tops a new AI-readiness ranking of 60 business schools

Stanford Graduate School of Business ranks first among 60 business schools worldwide on a new index measuring artificial intelligence readiness in management education. The report was released by 5W AI Communications, the AI-focused arm of public relations firm 5W Public Relations.

The AI Business School Index 2026, billed by its publisher as the first benchmark of its kind, scores schools across 14 countries on six equally weighted dimensions: AI curriculum integration, AI-founder and executive alumni, corporate AI partnerships, executive AI education, AI-focused research output, and AI citation share across large language models such as ChatGPT and Claude. Stanford GSB posts a composite score of 94.5, followed by MIT Sloan at 92.0 and Wharton at 90.5. Harvard Business School, Kellogg, Chicago Booth and Columbia Business School round out a top seven swept entirely by M7 schools. (See the complete list of ranked schools below.)

The report’s headline finding is a wide gap in AI coursework: Stanford GSB offers roughly 36 AI-integrated courses, 18 times the median of two among the 60 schools studied. The index also finds that 25 of the 60 schools – 42% – require no AI coursework at all, offering it only as an elective or not integrating it into any required course.

M7 SCHOOLS CLAIM A RUN OF FIRSTS

5W AI Communications is a division of 5W Public Relations, a New York-based agency that also sells generative-engine-optimization and AI-visibility services to corporate clients, and the index is one of several self-published “AI readiness” rankings the firm has produced this year, following a similar study of universities generally. As with any industry-commissioned ranking, the underlying methodology, data sources and scoring model have not been independently verified or peer-reviewed.

Among individual schools in the new ranking, the report credits Wharton as the only M7 school with a named AI major, “AI for Business,” which launched in fall 2025 and carries a STEM designation. Kellogg is cited as the only M7 school with a standalone AI degree, the 18-month MBAi program run jointly with Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering. Chicago Booth is named as the first M7 school to strike a partnership with OpenAI, and Harvard Business School is described as the first M7 school to make an AI course, “Data Science and AI for Leaders,” mandatory.

Tsinghua SEM is the highest-ranked school outside the United States, placing eighth overall with a composite score of 81.0. The report argues Tsinghua’s ranking is held down by a methodology that measures citation share against U.S.-based AI engines rather than Chinese ones, though it labels that finding an interpretation rather than a measured result.

STRATEGY OUTPACES IMPLEMENTATION

Beyond curriculum, the report highlights a divide between AI-strategy coursework and AI-implementation coursework, which it says appears in a ratio of roughly 9.5 to 1 across the schools studied, and finds corporate AI partnerships concentrated among a small cluster of roughly eight schools. It also flags what it calls a “GEO gap”: none of the 60 schools surveyed teaches generative engine optimization, the practice of managing how brands and information appear inside AI chatbots (a discipline 5W markets as part of its own service offerings).

The report portrays the findings as a call to action for corporate recruiters, posing a list of questions it suggests employers ask MBA candidates about their exposure to AI coursework, vendor evaluation and AI governance before hiring. Its authors predict business schools have roughly two admissions cycles before AI readiness carries the same weight in hiring decisions as finance or accounting training.

5W says composite scores carry a margin of roughly plus or minus 2.5 points at a 95% confidence interval, and it groups the 60 schools into three tiers: Tier I for composite scores of 82 and above, Tier II for scores between 72 and 81.9, and Tier III for scores below 72. The firm says it plans a second edition of the index for the second quarter of 2027 and that dimension-level data for all 60 schools is available on request.
