From The Harbus: “ECs talk about where they worked, what surprised them, and which lessons they’re bringing back to campus this fall.

Harsh Sanghi (Section A)

Where did you work this summer? Scope Health, a healthcare AI company automating the admin and paperwork in medicine — scheduling, insurance paperwork, medical scribing, and more — so doctors can focus on spending time with their patients and practicing medicine.

Why did you choose this path? I wanted to spend the summer being as close to AI as possible. Figuring out how to deploy AI to solve messy workflows across legacy industries is where there is immense opportunity in the next decade. I was looking at roles at later-stage startups, big tech, and AI PE funds, and decided to join Scope Health because they had the right combination of revenue/traction, a great team and founders, and backing from amazing VCs — yet the role would let me actually set up their entire SMB GTM motion, make decisions, and get real, tangible learning in a short 10 weeks. Most larger companies would not give me a fraction of the hands-on experience.

What was your experience like, and how does it impact your post-HBS goals? I loved it! I learned a lot about building a company and deploying AI to automate workflows, plus a lot about GTM and sales. I wanted to test if I would enjoy AI/software or only want to work on energy/climate, and this helped me confirm I can broaden my horizons. Post-HBS, I will look for a broader set of roles beyond energy. It also validated that PE/VC/the buy side are not the best roles for me post-HBS.

What advice do you have for RCs considering similar opportunities? Don’t worry about prestige and focus on finding a job that lets you actually do real things, gives you responsibility, and teaches you the most. Also use the summer internship as an opportunity to test a new thesis, new function, role, or industry.”

Chicago Booth Professor Churns Out 200 Academic Papers In Nine Months – Was AI Involved?

From the Washington Post: “Many academic researchers publish only a handful of papers each year, seeking scientific discoveries or solutions to everyday problems facing businesses and government agencies. Some especially busy professors might publish a dozen or more studies a year.

Then there’s the curious case of Nicholas Polson.

The University of Chicago statistician has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers and as many as 14 books released this year, unleashing speculation on the internet about whether he used artificial intelligence to inflate his production without disclosing the assistance.

The controversy highlights a growing concern in academia about whether some researchers could rely too heavily on AI to churn out a wave of papers that overwhelms journals charged with vetting the work.

“There’s going to be a flood of poor-quality research that the system is not equipped right now to handle,” said Claudine Gartenberg, senior editor for an academic journal called Organization Science, which publishes peer-reviewed studies on organizations, referring to research submissions in general.”

Georgetown McDonough Launches Jesuit Values for Business Initiative

From the McDonough School of Business: “Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business is deepening its commitment to forming business principled leaders through its newly launched Jesuit Values for Business Initiative. A first-of-its-kind effort among business schools, the initiative will intentionally integrate McDonough’s values-based approach across the full student experience, including curriculum, student formation, community life, leadership development, and school-led impact programs.

The Jesuit Values for Business Initiative builds on the school’s longstanding commitment to educate the whole person and prepare women and men for others. Through academic, co-curricular, and community-based experiences, the initiative will help students develop the self-awareness, discernment, and sense of purpose to consider not only what they can achieve through their careers but how they can contribute to human flourishing and the common good.

“We believe business education should prepare students to lead with purpose, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility for the impact of their decisions,” said Paul Almeida, dean and William R. Berkley Chair at Georgetown McDonough. “The Jesuit Values for Business Initiative builds on work that has long been part of the Georgetown tradition while creating a more intentional framework for how we support and advance our values across the school. By bringing greater focus and resources to our Jesuit heritage, we deepen the formation of our students and equip them to do well, do good, globally in a world that needs principled leadership more than ever before.”
