Becoming president of an organization I’m passionate about, and being able to pursue my graduate degree at the University of Michigan.
I’d like to move into corporate strategy, preferrably for a large international business and have a job that requires me to travel a lot.

Hello Mr. Laser System Designer! I’m Krista Nannery, a Senior Consultant with mbaMission. Funnily, I have actually worked with one laser system designer before!
I love that you have a patent and that you are/were president of a 50 member organization. That shows that you are a leader in your field and people really count on you. I also think this African infrastructure work will really help differentiate you in this very competitive process.

If I could give you any advice, I think you will be more successful if you wait at least one more year before applying to b-school. Maybe even two. While I think you are really interesting, it can be helpful for engineers to have more work-related leadership experience before applying to b-school. At work, look for ways to get more involved in corporate initiatives as well. (Maybe there’s a Young Engineers resource group you could join or launch, for example?) To be clear, if this is the year you want to apply to b-school, go for it. Just realize it may be a bit tougher now. Not impossible, but tougher. You’ll want your recommenders to stress your maturity and your resume will really need to show leadership and impact.
Then, for your goals, be careful of stating “large international business” and “I want a job where I travel a lot.” Make it more about the type of work you want to do and the impact you want to have…do your research on potential industries and employers and narrow that down a bit. Download the employment reports of the schools that you are interested in and see who is hiring. Circle companies you are interested in and a pattern will definitely emerge!
I love that you are thinking about international programs…if you’re looking at HEC and INSEAD, also check out Oxford and Cambridge.
Hope that helps!
