As a former MIT Sloan adcom, I have experience evaluating military applicants and know the amazing leadership capabilities they can display. I love that you have had an increase in oversight during your career as well as budgetary responsibility. I’m also very impressed by your admission to medical school and your non-profit board membership. That being said, your professional and academic decisions will also raise some concerns for the admissions committee. They will question why you need an MBA with 11 years of work experience (over twice the average for a typical MBA admit) and why you need one at all given you already have an M.Ed. and are getting your MD. Why are you attracted to consulting and tech? Do you want to do something that incorporates the medical/health field and business? Admissions officers will also be thinking about your background from a career development standpoint. Will they be able to help you get your foot in the door in consulting given your background, or will consulting recruiters feel you are “too experienced” to come in as an associate? I think it would serve you well to do some soul-searching around exactly how you see your next career step panning out so you can tell a cohesive story in your applications. I also think you would be better off targeting EMBA programs OR 1 year accelerated MBAs explicitly geared toward mid-career professionals (like the MIT Sloan Fellows Program, Stanford MSx, and LBS Sloan Fellows programs). Cornell Johnson’s one year MBA also has a slightly more experienced class, so programs similar to theirs with an older average class profile would also be wise to consider.
