Started out at a bulge bracket investment bank, then moved to a top boutique investment bank. Neither were “traditional” banking roles, but rather niche advisory groups (more similar to consulting). I am passionate about climate change and want to spend the rest of my career doing everything in my power to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

I helped lead an internal team that created a database that harnesses our firm’s proprietary data to provide new insights to our clients and has automated what was previously manual work. I am also proud of the long-term relationships I’ve built with my clients, gaining experience presenting to CEOs and boards of Fortune 500 companies.
I want to use the skills that I have developed, supplemented by a formal business education, to move to an operations/strategy role at a company that is having a broad and direct environmental impact (e.g. renewable energy or sustainable retail startup). My long term goal is to become a COO or other C-suite executive at such a company.

Hi Ms. Environmental Impact, This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I like that you have strong academics (GPA, GMAT) and a unique work background. Working in banking from a different role can help to differentiate you, provided you are able to showcase the unique perspective that you can bring to the b-school classroom. I like that you have demonstrated leadership at work and outside your immediate job scope (through starting a sustainability group at your firm). Does any part of your work also touch on sustainability? Be sure to explain in your essays why you’re interested in sustainability work, and any other projects (in college or at work) that could prepare you for a job in this field. Be sure to explain in your essays why you’re interested in sustainability work, and any other projects (in college or at work) that could prepare you for a job in this field. Further, if you have done any networking with companies or professionals in this field, this could be helpful information to show the Admissions Committee (AdCom) that you are prepared to make the pivot post-MBA. AdCom naturally wants all their graduates to be successful in their careers and the more preparedness you can show, the more credible your career goals story will be. Best wishes on your application!
Ms. Environmental Impact – thanks for posting your profile. Susan Cera here from Stratus.
There is a lot to like about your profile – strong stats, solid work and a commitment to making an impact. I feel like there must be a personal story behind your interest in climate change that will tie things together. THIS is where you really need to focus – what is your motivation and how will HBS or another MBA program address gaps in your skills and knowledge to put you on a path to achieve your goals. If you can present a compelling story, I think you have a shot at HBS.

I really like Wharton for you because of their Business, Energy, Envrionment and Sustainability major. However, I completely understand that returning to Penn may not be the ‘right’ option for you. But, worth a look.
Other programs that I think would set you up for success around energy and sustainability are Michigan Ross (Erb Institute) and Duke Fuqua (Energy concentration, CASE).
Wishing you all the best on your MBA application journey!
