Mississippi State University’s Distance MBA combines affordability and flexibility in a fully online program designed for working professionals. With total tuition just over $25,000, the program delivers courses 100% online with an emphasis on management, marketing, finance, strategy, and quantitative analysis. Students can choose a general MBA track or, for three credits more, earn the Distance MBA with a concentration in Project Management.
“Experience Bulldog Business” with personalized academic advising, live consulting projects, rolling admissions, and a high level of convenience.
“BEST FOR VETS” AND OTHER MILITARY-FRIENDLY DESIGNATIONS
The program, which was launched in 2005, has roots in the military dating back to 1998 when Mississippi State first offered interactive video classrooms to military personnel. Today, it is ranked 38th best online MBA for military veterans by U.S. News. The self-described “military-friendly” program doesn’t require any on-campus visits, making things easier for military members to continue their education while deployed or after changing stations. Additionally, the school is a Servicemembers Opportunity College (SOCS), and it follows the Institutional Operating Guidelines to facilitate graduate program admissions, enrollment, and degree completion by service members.

Students take eight core classes covering Leadership Skills, Strategic Marketing Management, Corporate Finance, Financial & Accounting Report Analysis, Business Decision Analysis, Supply Chain Logistics, Strategic Entrepreneurship Management, and Strategic Business Consulting, as well as their choice of two elective classes. Multiple business electives are available for students to choose from, and they include topics such as data analytics, entrepreneur law, real estate law, investments, economics, and internet marketing. The school also allows students to choose from non-business courses at MSU to satisfy their 6-hour elective.
If interested in pursuing a concentration, students can choose to do Mississippi State’s MBA in Project Management for just three more credits than the regular Distance MBA.
FLEXIBLE, HIGH-ENGAGEMENT ONLINE LEARNING
All of the MSU Distance MBA courses are delivered asynchronously, utilizing recorded videos, discussion boards, some conferencing tools, and audio lectures. According to students, course content and delivery are very diverse and there are occasions when they’ll be asked to log on at a specific time for chat discussion.
Blake Baggott, a recent graduate says “I chose the online MBA program due to its format. Beyond the flexibility of the program itself, the MBA online truly shines with balanced assignments, group projects, and meaningful discussions that apply real life scenarios to what is being taught in the classroom. This program has strengthened my ability to collaborate virtually, communicate clearly with classmates, and manage deadlines across teams. As a young adult, the program offered responsibility beyond the classroom, allowing me to learn the balance of time management as well as financial responsibilities. Ultimately, the MBA online has been a decision that continues to support my academic success in and outside the classroom.”
APPLICANT PROFILE AND PREREQUISITES
On average, students entering the MSU Distance MBA program are 26 years old with approximately five years of experience working in their field. Mississippi State doesn’t impose a minimum work experience requirement on applicants, nor does it require a GMAT or GRE score. The preferred undergraduate GPA is 3.0.
Finally, there are their prerequisite courses in accounting, finance, and statistics that have to be completed by students who did not complete an undergraduate degree in business and/or for those who may have taken the foundational courses during their undergraduate work, but finished with a grade lower than a “B.” These courses are offered in online format for students to complete.
Looking to the future of the Distance MBA at MSU and where the program is headed, the school reports that a review of its offerings is currently underway.
