About the Program

The Penn State Online MBA is delivered online through Penn State World Campus in partnership with the Smeal College of Business and is consistently ranked among the top online MBA programs by U.S. News and World Report. The program is designed to provide students with the contemporary skills they need to manage teams in today’s complex and competitive work environment.

This 48-credit online program is customized to meet students’ unique career interests and the program is flexible timewise, which is highly attractive to the many students juggling personal and professional commitments.

At the heart of the OMBA is a three-part teaching and learning approach called ICE. Incorporating principles of Integration, Collaboration, and Engagement, ICE serves as the defining spirit of the program and shapes everything from the overall design and implementation of classes to the selection process when admitting new students. Unique to the Smeal College of Business is the Creative Team Model (CTM) a collaboration of a lead faculty member, teaching support specialist (industry liaison) and an instructional designer to deliver the courses.

In the application, the school seeks a resume, essay, transcripts, and two professional references.
As for curriculum, students can expect to learn how to use statistical techniques, as well as accounting and financial data, to analyze and evaluate business decisions, develop leadership skills fundamental to managing a business, and be able to analyze and solve business problems from multiple functional perspectives. The Penn State Online MBA allows students to customize their program with more than 25 concentrations – a relatively large number for an online MBA.

Students begin the program with a required virtual residency. There will be optional opportunities to visit campus throughout the course of the program, but they will never be required.

Surprisingly to some, online students receive many of the same benefits as students in the school’s on-campus and executive programs, including optional global immersion trips, leadership immersion experiences, plus individualized career services and advising.

Like most schools, Penn State takes a holistic approach when reviewing candidates. Some of the elements the admissions committee wants to see is that the student has professional experience to share in a collaborative, team environment, self-awareness, excellent communication skills, and strong academics.
