One of those opportunities is the dual degree MBA program. “Basically, we created a path to integrate the MBA for medical students,” Richtermeyer says.

Another example of the interdisciplinary approach at UMass Lowell is how it prepares students for emerging tech jobs.

The university has partnered with Salesforce to train students through Trailhead, an online learning platform that teaches in-demand Salesforce skills. It’s an innovative way to prepare business students with the skills that modern global companies demand.

“What we’ve done is brought [Trailhead] into our MBA curriculum and students in the marketing courses or in the IT courses have the opportunity to earn Salesforce badges,” Richtermeyer says. “The employers love it. They love that we can prepare students who are familiar with Salesforce as a platform and are ready to go with the skillset.”

GLOBAL ENTREPRENEURIAL EXPERIENCE

The online MBA at UMass Lowell emphasizes a global entrepreneurial learning experience within the Manning School of Business that allows students to take part in a two-week immersion in entrepreneurship and innovation. Online MBAs can go abroad to either India or China to take an accelerated, 3-credit elective course during the Winter or Summer terms and learn a variety of entrepreneurial skills from design thinking to digital marketing.

“It gives students an immersive experiential approach to how they can gain entrepreneurial skills to help them launch their careers whether they go to a small business or a big company,” Richtermeyer says. “Interdisciplinary collaboration is a key element of our program. We’re not a business schools that’s on an island by itself. We consistently look for opportunities to expand and collaborate.”
