The IIMA MBA: What You Need To Know

Established in 1961, the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) has a renown global reputation for business management education. One of the three oldest IIMs on the Subcontinent — IIM-Calcutta was also founded in 1961, while IIM-Bangalore was founded in 1973 — IIM-Ahmedabad is “one of the top business schools in the world,” public relations executive Mitaaly Naidu says. “IIMA brings together great minds, nurtures talent, and educates leaders of enterprises.”

The city itself has an entrepreneurial spirit, vibrant food scene, and a low cost of living compared to other cities in India. Ahmedabad is home to top finance and tech companies like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Adani Capital, TCS, IBM, and Infosys. Students enjoy getting out of the city and exploring nearby Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary and the Gir Forest National Park.

IIM has campuses in most states in India, but Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta remain the top schools. While they share a name, they are not cooperating entities. Like the UC system in California, each IIM is actually an independent university, with its own governance, dean, and its own approach to teaching.

“In my academic career, my proudest achievement is to go to that place,” says past MBA Sanjeev Kumar. “It’s unimaginable to a U.S. audience how hard it is to get in. In India, everybody who is academically bright will take a shot at getting into the school. So literally if you choose the 200 brightest people in India every year and you put them on that campus — that’s what it’s like.”

The goals of the program are to equip MBAs with conceptual and interpersonal skills and sense of social purpose for managerial decision-making, help them to develop leadership capabilities to act as change agents and be a source of motivation in the organizations they work in, and to nurture the desire to excel in performance without compromising integrity, honesty, and fairness.

The first year is composed of core courses. Between the first and second year, students partake in a n internship with one of the University’s corporate partners to gain first-hand experience. Year two is allotted for electives in many areas, including Agri Management, Entrepreneurship, Innovations in Education, Business Policy, Communication, Economics, Finance and Accounting, Human Resources Management, Information Systems, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour, Production and Quantitative Methods and Public Systems Group.

The campus has its own ecosystem, with everyone living and working in the same space.
“It’s not like the U.S. where you go to school and you live in your own apartment, this is like a dorm for everybody, so everybody lives on campus, everybody eats out of the same dining hall, it’s a 24-hour engagement,” he says. “You go to class in the morning, which is right next to your dorm, then you have lunch in the dorm. It’s a very strong, very tight-knit community. Faculty, too, live and work on campus. It is actually like its own town. There is a boundary around it, a main gate you enter to enter the campus, everybody who is associated with campus lives on campus,” says Kumar.

Over the years, the IIMA has established partnerships with leading management schools for an Exchange Program. Each year, some 150 students from the second class are chosen to spend one academic term abroad at a partner institute in Europe, North America, South America, South Africa, Australia, and the Asia-Pacific region. During this time, IIMA accepts about 90 students from its partners for the same period.
